On-one Pompino - advice on spec and extras?

I'm in need a bike I can lock and leave and was thinking of getting a Pompino for this purpose.

Because I've got a very hectic familiy life I don't get a lot of time to ride and so I want every ride I do to be enjoyable - which discounts an absolute beater.

Any thoughts on the latest incarnation of the pomp?
Are the wheels OK?
I'd like to get guards and a rack for it so any recommendations?
I assume if you spec a freewheel you can run it fixed or free or it is just one or the other?
Any other changes/suggestions?

Cheers

J

Fixed/Free will depend on the wheels you buy but most SS wheels will have a flip/flop hub.

My SS has the following bits on it
    Tortec Hybrid Velocity rack
Shimano freewheel, or if rich try White Industries freewheel
    Halo Aerorage wheels
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
  • I bought the Pompino frame and fork earlier and built up from parts from my last fixed gear - the full build looks like good value and you can't really go wrong with any of the components.

On-one do discount a lot so may be worth waiting till after christmas to see if the price drops.

I've got SKS chromoplastic mudguards on mine - note that you have to drill the guard then bolt it on under the rear brake bridge.

If you fancy having a few gears and don't mind flat bars they're doing the Pompetamine for £599 at the moment.

Avid BB7s and an Alfine hub for an extra £100 is pretty good value!

Could be a contender for n+1.....

I'm quite tempted by one of these too - couple things put me off, the flat bars - I'd have to swap out for drops, and the weight, I expect this to be fairly weighty - no ?
It looks like the brakes are road (drop) lever compatible I think but for shifting I'm not sure if there is a cheap and easy swap from the one that it comes with ?
8-speed hub-geared disc-braked taking full 'guards is close to the ideal commuter. Short'ish commutes - perfect, longer, mine's 35 miles return, and flats are jsut not suitable. Plus mine is hilly so a 2kg+ frame is just more than I want to cart up and down dale. Good price tho'

If you want a light bike and drops then that pompetamine is probably not for you.

If you want drops on an Alfine equipped bike the Versa brifters are the only real option I'm aware of and they're not cheap.

I love my pomp but I'm glad I have a "normal" (and light!) road bike for the better weather.

Hmm, adding on that cost for the 'STI' type shifters nudges it up a fair bit, bit too much methinks.

Yeah - I thought about getting a Pompino as I wanted the low maintenance of an Alfine hub and drops.

Just to increase your awareness  , and as per another thread, there is also the Jtek bar end shifter: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/J-Tek-Alloy-B ... vi-content
  • Where is it going to be locked and left? If its outside in a public place then a nice bike like that will most likley be stolen.Even good quality locks can be broken off/cut through without too much hassell.
If I were leaving any bike outside for a few hours then IMO an older secondhand bike from Ebay/Gumtree is the only way to go.

    +1
If you intend leaving it anywhere it needs to be very unattractive to any tea leaves!

It'd have to be a pretty bad Pompino for me to turn it down, that's for sure.
