Is it me or is Tim Minchin a tw4t?

Exactly - who?

So he cant be funny so he plays piano. Then he realises he cant play the piano. But does he give up - NO - he combines the two things he's not good at and tries to make a career out of it.

heres a sample of his lyrics

"I really like Christmas
It's sentimental, I know, but I just really like it
I am hardly religious
I'd rather break bread with Dawkins than Desmond Tutu, to be honest"

Ground breaking comedy there, I'm sure we all agree - jolly good.

i'm blinded by his cynicism, his hatred for the pope, religion, alternative medicine etc, so i'm probably not the best judge as to whether he's a comedian or not

Spooky. My Sisters pseudonym for her photography is Storm. She's a lot la-di-dah and did live in London and she cannot take photo's to save her chuff.
I sit on the fence but not sure why he has to be a cross between Ozzie Osborne and Diana Ross.

No, bill baileys funny and he can play. Minchin can't - and he wears make up - and he wears an australian accent - and all the evidence is now stacked up against him - he's tw4t. :P

Also do you remember that big spooky undertaker looking man jim tavare - even he was a bit funny - and petula clark he was funny

Hang on a mo, you wear make-up ...quote "I only wear glasses to stop my make up running", you can't play the piano how can you be sure you're not a tw4t? and by the way that guy petula clark was not funny, i saw him singing downtown, and never laughed once, I even listened to 'Don't sleep in the subway darling' didn't crack a smile, in fact he made me feel miserable.

Can't recall ever having seen Minchin doing his turn but I did hear him on Desert Island Discs or something similar early this year. He was just completely dull! And in no way funny or even slightly amusing. I presume he must have done some vaguely amusing things but he's hardly Stuart Lee.

Minchin included, do you not think that there are a whole lot of comedians who seem to have missed the point ?. They just aren't funny. Could be just a generation thing though. A bit along the lines of not very talented boy/girl bands.

It is better to steer clear of "they are not funny" " not as good as it used to be in my day" "too loud" type assessments for music/comedy/art etc when trying to tie it in with a generational aspect. Times change, things change, people change.

People have been saying that "today's" music was not as good as "yesterday's" music since, well, since music began. Comedy is the same.

As for me? I think Tim Minchin is superb. I'm sure lots of people don't find him funny but this is the same with any comedian in any period. He sells lots of tickets for lots of shows so there is no shortage of people who DO find him funny.

    Different strokes and all that.

i personally wouldn't class him as a 'comedian' more a humorous observationalist, who puts his thoughts across in rhyme. You either get it/like it or you don't no big deal, I personally like his humour and style. I remember once seeing Ben Elton on stage. A great comedy writer I'm sure but as a stand up comedian.. you're joking!

    This.

Also, when we look at yesterday's music/artistic output, it's invariably only a few artists. The rest didn't stand the test of time.

I quite like some of the shows Jack Whitehall is in, his mere presence is enough to send a few posters on this forum into a catatonic rage about how he's a posh dady's boy and shouldn't be on the tv.

Clicked the link, saw him, thought 'oh him' and closed the window.

I think he's crap, but also thought Charlie Chuck was crap. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rstrzHXSJB0 - although now I find him quite funny. Odd thing humour. Very personal thing.

Jack Whitehall is a bigger twat than Munchin' but they are both unfunny.

It definitely seems like the return of posh people in the last 3 or 4 years. Maybe they just feel safe to be posh now when before they pretended to be of the people, like Victoria Aitken.

Minchin is one of the nicest and funniest comics I have ever worked with. Added to that he's not only a bloody talented
pianist, but simply bloody talented at everything. Early in the year he tried snowboarding for the first time. On his 2nd day I was escorting him down black runs.

As for that young whippersnapper Jack Whitehall...

Not a huge fan of his comedic songs - an updated, Aussie, Victoria Wood.

    However:

    - As a songwriter - I went to see the musical Matilda with the family and thought it was great,
    - As a singer - saw him in Jesus Christ Superstar and he was outstanding
    - As a bloke - every interview I've seen he has come across as a good guy.

Yes it does - of pace and timing and rhythm and language and our cultural heritage of gently ribbing our own and the failings of others and it makes you appreciate the craft of the wordsmith comic - watch the minchin "Storm' and that makes you think 'what a stuck up middle class twat' - so glad you agree with me.

So what you're saying is Minchin should take up skiing - totally agree with you.

Al I've got more mates that I count who do the comedy circuit here and nationwide and when they're shit, i tell them theyre shit - just because minchin advertises himself as a comic doesnt mean he is funny.

And worst of all - the cardinal sin of comedy - he's cliched and relies on stereotypes.

"But you see the problem is
He always dreamt of being a star
But he learned piano instead of guitar
Which in the nineties didn't get you very far
So while all the other kids were learning Stairway
He was the piano to their forte
But he was convinced one day
    He'd rock their fucking asses
Be an icon for the disenfranchised masses
    And grow his hair long
    And rebel against the state
But just for now that'd have to wait
Cos he's running late for his morning classes"

Disappointed in you Al, i thought you knew about comedy.

Cleat is right, Tim Minchin isn't funny. Mind you I know a lot of people who think people like him are funny just because they think its 'clever' that he can play a piano and make up a song with apparent jokes in it. If it is clever, it still doesn't make it funny.

I know some people will find it funny though. Some people find Lenny Henry funny for god's sake. (other unfunny people include Miranda Hart, Katy Brand, and Andy Parsons... oh, and Stephen K Amos, Omid Djalili and and and and...)
  • As themekon has already mentioned, most recent 'comedians' are unfunny, as are nowaday 'singers' and 'actors'. IMO.
