Actually the answer is fascinating.
Whirlpool is a crypotographic function. It encrypts data, like passwords - password protection, if you will.
The Superb Fairy Wren (gayus wrennus superbus) also, quite incredibly password protects its eggs.
The wren is susceptible to the actions of a cuckoo who lays its eggs in the wrens nest. The cuckoos eggs hatch earler than the wrens so when the cuckoo egg hatches the wrens eggs are simple discarded.
So in order to tell which eggs are hers the wren has a cunning trick. Before the eggs hatch the mum emits a 'tune' made up of 11 tonal elements - one of the elements is of a certain length which is particular to that bird. When the mum returns to the nest with food the gaping wrens emit the same 'key' tone telling the mother they are her offspring.
