Just wondering what size rings you guys recommend.
Currently got the standard 44-32-22 but want to go 2x9 so thinking of 36-22 instead.
Running 11-36 on the back.

Thanks Nathan
Cheers Nathan.

how are you going to go 36-11 9spd on the rear?

  • If you know why you want to go 2 x 9 then surely you should know?

Sorry mate should have read 11-34

Just want to know whether anyone thinks a 36 front ring is the way to go?

Want to simplify things thats all. Been over Cannock chase again this afternoon and I didn't use the biggest front ring again so it is mostly redundant for that type of riding
    Cheers Nathan.
  • Are you sure? You might want to count the teeth.

not shimano or Sram then unless it is a modded 36-12 that has been fitted with a 11T instead of a 12T.

that is the reason as it seems you have then an odd set of cogs that might change front cog options.

so what are the cog sizes?

well you will get very different answers.

    what have you got? 12-14-16-18-21-24-28-32-36?

and presuming you have a 12 rather than an 11 would give very very different answers

I can tell you what i use for my 11-34 2 ring set up but again what are you using it for?

I am going to go 2x9, 39/26 front and 11-34 rear.

The front ring sizes you list are quite small; depending on the chainset you plan to fit, assuming you are not remoiving the largest ring on a 3 ring chainset, then most 2 ring chainset limit the small ring to 24T; so you are not going to be able to fit a 22T.

Not true, SRAM and XTR M985 ones would stop you using a 22t inner, but SLX/XT/M980 Trail just use a 64/104 BCD.

24/36 and 11-34 would be my first choice for a trail bike. I'm currently using 22/32 and sometimes feel like I could do with the big ring being a bit larger. If it was for an XC bike I'd be looking at something a bit bigger up front, probably 26/39.

    It's all personal choice though.

I ran mine 2x9 on 22/32, wanted more top speed so went 22/36 but then given the gears I actualy used swapped to a 26/36 and found that ideal for a 2x9, although I am now going 1x9 (32T).

    I went 32/44, then 30/42 then 28/40 - which I found the best.

    Personal innit.
  • I have 39/27 on my 2x9 set up (11x34 cassette). Works very well.

    Cheers for all the replys.
I've ordered a 36t to go with the 22. I'll get a bash as well.
    Cheers Nathan.
