Don't ask me why but I'm totally drawn to these bikes, does anyone commute on one? I have a practical commuter bike but now I'd like something steel and single speed (though I can live with sturmey archer) is this proposition entirely bonkers?

I'm aware some compromises in practicality would have to be made for aesthetics sake.
Whether you're a king or a little street sweeper, sooner or later you'll dance with the reaper.

    why not go for the Dawes ambassador?

    Same sort of thing, but much more wallet friendly if it is just on looks!

    I recently heard mention of new-kids-on-the-block http://www.jaspacycles.com

    I've not ridden one or even seen one so can't vouch etc,.

    My regular commuter is a Pashley Paramount (same frame as their Parabike) which I've fitted with a 3-speed. The drum brakes especially are great for a commuter bike as they're almost zero maintenance and aren't any worse braking in the wet.

    The guv'nor is lovely looking. I would want mudguards myself though.

    I really want drums on my commuter. Squeely v brake a front and annoying coaster at the back are doing my head in.

    I don't like these bikes if I'm honest. The most retro I'd get is an all city nature boy - know there's a bike which doesn't make any sense on paper but I just want one (so I do have some sympathy). See: http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/ ... y-11-42858

    Pashley are "tottering around the park with hte partner" bikes... that said, last July I saw a guy on a Pashley completing the Retroronde in Belgium, so anything is possible, really

    Who thinks a single speed cross bike doesn't make sense has never been on a bike... it makes a lot of sense and the Nature Boy looks fantastic

    Well I agree but there are plenty who don't. I had a Tricross single speed for years - great bike, shame they stopped making them.
