Sore Hip after ride

A few weeks back I did my first group ride with some guys a lot more experienced and powerful than myself. It was a tough 50 miles and we climbed about 500m too.

The following day I was expecting some serious pain all over but it was just my left hip/buttock which was a bit sore and stiff- I put this down to using new muscle groups and battled on.

Went out for a quick 20 miler this morning which again had some hills and left hip/buttock is hurting again.

My questions is- is this down to poor bike fitment, poor technique, or just something I will have to get used to at the outset. My right side is fine and this is natural side during football etc.

Thoughts?

Either adaptation or bike fit. Check your saddle height, if it is too high your hips will rock and lead to pain in odd places. If the pain is in the buttock, it's probably just DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) from climbing lots of hills.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
