Or should I have said 'Subject' ?
Surely not ?
Cameroon got booed at the Olympics, at the Tory conference, he gets booed pretty often. He's not exactly popular and up pops Boris in the mix. The thing is, I think the electorate just might vote for him 'cos I think Ed 'Wallace' Milliband has 0 presence or credibility. Whats our choice ?

Immigrate to Portugal and harrass Team47b for a 'cup of sugar' whilst we all settle in ? ...

We seek cities because there are a greater range of girls at the bar, of reproductive choice. But above all, talented people seek cities for fame. They can’t get famous in the f***ing village.

In my opinion, he would get slaughtered.

His post as London Mayor works because a large percentage of the london electorate (who vote - "Rupert, we're going for post-vote drinks, man up and get down the polling station. LASH. TIES ON HEADS.") are white middle class 25-35yr olds who moved to 'London' (wow) after university, who like things like 'Gangnam Style' and who think Boris is 'good value' simply for his rar rar speeches and hilarious goofball shenanigans.

Seeing as the rest of the country has a majority of middle aged women that he's an idiot, i don't think he'd do too well.

But after all of that, he's probably still doing better than Milliband.
  • Boris is a threat. He's currently the most popular politician in the country and has successfully distanced himself from all the popular resentment towards both parties in the coalition. And he's also the only Tory for a long time to win an election.

And yet, I'm not so sure whether he can win an outright general election victory. He's buffoonish image, which serves him so well in London, might not sit so well with the nationwide electorate in terms of keys to No.10. He's also part of the same Bullingdon club Old Etonians that Cam is from. He certainly has strengths that other politicians don't have, yet these may well become his Achilles heel.

I think he's in with a shot. It just depends how smart (or not) the Labour Party is in countering the 'Boris threat'.

Naturally, being a raving leftie and all, I sincerely hope the electorate don't vote him into Downing street.

Not sure your assessment of his support base is accurate, but I don't live in London so my view is that of an outsider. I get the sense that, as mayor, he gets support across the political spectrum. London is electorally left wing and despite this he wins. That must mean people like him, and what he does for them, more than they like their traditional politics. I can't see that translating as effectively across the country but if I were Ed I'd be more worried about him than Dave. I know I am.

I am inclined to agree with you here. On a day when support for the Tories slumped (councils), Boris defied the trend. So he's clearly able to pick up votes (at least in London) who don't vote Tory.

The challenge he faces in continuing this trend both on a nationwide scale and in a general election, which is a different ball game.

If he gets to be Tory leader then he will face slightly more difficult questions than in the past. Like, "what will your policies on education, employment and healthcare be?"

This contrasts refreshingly with all the people who think they can justify their bigoted opinions

This has been one of my favourite, if short, threads for a while. Differences of opinion politely stated.
  • Sweet baby jesus, Boris on one side (maybe) and Ed milliband onthe other.

    God help us.

    Its not even funny.

Whilst it may appear to be something out of some game show, it is'nt unfortunately. If it was it would be 'Britains got no talent' or the 'WF' Factor (We're fu**ed).

All these lefties make me laugh with this cobblers about how the sky is falling because someone other than a committed socialist might actually be voted in to a position of limited power.

For the record some of us have lived through the utter sh!te times that occurred on Wilson's, Callaghan's, Blair's & Brown's times in power, so don't start pretending that it's all sunshine if a lefty gets in and certain doom if not. On balance it's been better when the correct person wins, and my list of correct winners excludes that shambolic bunch of wasters just mentioned.

I am not laughing. Especially under this fascistic tory govt. They want to cut the welfare bill by £10bn. Okay, so they cut housing benefit and not cap the rents by re-deploying a rent authority because A) that would be undoing a Thatcherite move and B) they don't want to upset the Tory landlord voters, so we end up getting f*cked.
The local 'Seriously strong cheese' factory, Lactalis has just announced profits of 5.2m. Up from 3.1m last year. they are laying off people and re-taking the staff on via agencies. Great, using the recession as an excuse to maximise profits.
Tesco, Sainsbury, ASDA etc have staff that are on temporary, part time contracts. In fact 70% of their staff. These staff members do not get a proper pension and rely on Housing Benefit and Working Tax Credits. So we, the tax payer are subsidising the profits of the service sector, the sector that has tried and failed to take over from our dwindling, under invested industry with its short-termist (keep the shareholder happy) mentality. Re-investment figures are less than 1.5% in the UK whilst Germany has a mandatory 2% and averages of 4.5 - 6.5%.

So no wonder the welfare bill is so high and no wonder there is no job security and no wonder we have a dwindling pension pot. When are the electorate going to realise that successive Tory govts. are the elite for the elite. I am not saying Millibland is the answer but the current administration are a muddle of buggers, literally and metaphorically.
Those societies that prosper (read The Spirit Level) and have the highest standard of living are predominantly left wing.
I am not going to vouch for the complete and utter mismanagement of our economy due to successive tory and labour administrations but their record should not label 'lefties' as people who have not got a clue.
Denis Healey tried to cap mortgages in 1976 to 3 and a half a persons income. maybe if it hadn't been defeated by the greedy landowning, property owning tories, we would not have nearly the current housing farce that is rolling out all over the country.
I am left wing and proud of it. Drop the stereotyping and use a proper argument.

  • I heard last night that the MP for Croydon South Richard Ottaway has confirmed he won't stand for re-election. Safe Tory seat, big majority, perfect seat for Boris to re-enter parliament with...?
