Parts Swap, BB Advice

Hello, could you help me please? I'm looking to buy an On-One Scandal 26" frame
http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/FROO26SCVD/on_one_scandal_26er_vertical_dropout_frame
and transferring over as many parts as possible from my 8-speed, 2008 Kona Blast http://klassickona.com/oldgold/08/08_blast_w.htm

The Scandal has a 68mm BB shell, but my Kona has an FSA Powerdrive 73x113 bottom bracket. I spoke to the tech guy at On-One about adding spacers to make the BB fit the Scandal, but he said the axle needed to be at least 115mm long to avoid the drivetrain rubbing the chainstay. Would a powerdrive 68 x 118 be the one I need then?

Thanks

    Hi again

Anyone? Having again just read my post, I'm wondering if you know what I'm on about!

Can I transfer all the transmission parts from the Kona to the Scandal, except for the 73 x113 bb. Instead if I get the same make/model bb but in 68x118 for the Scandal, will this give an ideal chainline and make the gears work properly?

Alernatively, I see you can get 9-speed Deore cranks with bb for a decent price. Would you know if these will work OK with the rest of the 8-speed bits?

    Thanks again :)

dont bother you are limited to FSA for that fiting. get some Deore HT2 cranks and BB.

OP, your proposed setup will work with one additional (and, optionally, another) component.

You will need a 2.5mm spacer on the driveside and optionally, a lockring on the the non driveside to take up the 2.5mm of exposed thread that protrudes.

    Spacer:

BB lockring (the 1.37 x 24 TPI threaded ring with three notches - very commonly found on BSO bikes):

    please explain how?
he has been told that he needs a longer axle not the same size.

Unless he offsets the axle by 1 and a bit mm to give the same driveside clearance as a 115mm.....that would mean using 3.5mm plus of spacers on the driveside, short term I don't see an issue with it, then when he needs anything fixing he can replace the lot. Many insert BB's are offset slightly as the BB shells are never that accurately centered anyway!

Hello bikaholic and The Beginner, thanks for taking the time to help out further but I've bought the Deore cranks and BB now (and the Scandal frame). If I like the frame I'll invest in the rest of the 9-speed parts.

All the best, bye for now

Make sure to check the BB shell is faced, if not get it done!

Because I ignored the advice given by the On-One tech guy who doesn't know much about his own product, and relied on personal experience instead.

OP, since you will be in possession of all the components necessary, why don't you try it and see.
You'd only need to screw in the driveside BB thread, driveside crank and using one spacer from the HT2 chainset that you've just bought.

Pretty unlikely combo, I'd not waste my time.

I'll try it. Providing pictures will be a problem, but I'll let you know the outcome. Give me a few days.

Hang on folks, I'm to try this with a 68x118 am I? Because I don't possess one  , I was going to get the one and only one I could find off ebay from Taiwan for £20, but only if I was given the thumbs up. If I'm trying this with the 73x113, then please ignore this edit!
