Tried to swap my Shimano brake lever this morning (M775 for an M765) but the hose/oilve won't come out, is there a technique for this or just more brute force and ignorance?

If you're just swapping the lever, can you just stick the old hose back in, complete with olive? Can't imagine the socket the hose goes into is much different between levers.

Failing that you could cut through the old olive using a Dremel and put a new one on, or shorten the hose by 10mm and use a new pin+olive.

The olive is meant to be well stuck on because it deforms when you tighten it up to stop leaks. You might be able to get it off if it wasn't done up particularly tight in the first place. Try putting an adjustable wrench around the olive and sliding it up the hose to bash it off. You might damage the hose doing this though.

You missed the point, the hose/olive won't come out the lever housing!

    more force needed.

you do have a bleed kit dont you.

Nick, have the stuff to bleed it with yes.

More force to be applied, what happens if the hose pulls out the olive leaving the Olive behind?

I think the previous owner was a rockape as the compression nut was very tight, a screw on the cap rounded out and the gasket all twisted out of position and leaking!

an easy out will sort it if the hose separates.

just give it a bit of twist. you will be losing the first few inches anyway of pliers etc....
