Right. I've got two weeks off work in late October and i fancy a trip away from riding. Will be nice to get my AirMiles up too. So, here is your task. Recommend me somewhere to go. Fire away my pretties.

I assume you want something a little different?

Montevideo, Uruguay - a lovely place, a real surprise.

Panama City - the old quarter especally. It has been very nicely restored lately an has a raffish cool feel that s a mix of mediaeval Barcelona and 1950s Havana.

Adelaide - great wines, lovely weather in October, great restaurants beaches and a thriving cultural scene, close to Kangaroo Island for sone superb wildlife spotting. Flinders Ranges, Barossa Valley, Clare Valley and McLaten Vale all within range.

Spent a little time in Montevideo, it is a city of extremes (there again, what large cities are'nt), endless endless beaches, thriving city but some of it is very run down Didnt see too much myself but nice relaxed people in Uruguay.
I spent time further up river in the Colonia region, a wierd mix of old colonial style buildings, ramshackle houses, many many cars from the 50s, 60s and 70s, even occasional stuff from the 30s like old Model Ts and Chevrolet pickups.
Countryside up river is actually pretty much like the UK...i felt quite at home.
  • Boston, MA.

Good food, good shopping Boston and neighbouring Cambride are a bit English with cars on the wrong side of the road. Plenty to do tourist wise. Freedom Trail, Old Ironsides, I recommend the duck boat tour. The drivers know their stuff.

  • Another vote for Munich from me. It's the one city I will definitely visit again.
  • Paradise City - Where the grass is green and the girls are pretty
  • Brazil, no, Scotland, no wait, that place where they make eccles cakes.

Another vote for Munich. I could never tire of the place. Bavaria is one of the nicest places on earth, and at this time of year I would recommend it. Easy, fast travel to the sticks, hire an mtb for the day and bomb down mountains. Quaff some excellent beers after - pretty much heaven.

There is no city in the world I'd want to holiday in for two weeks in. Especially not a city with no real history (US, most of Middle East).

    Mix it up a bit.

Beijing and Shanghai might be a good option to see the old and the new in both cities. Shanghai has the most amazing clubs you'll ever see while Beijing is culturally rich with lots of history and brilliant food.

    Cheap as chips too.

as the OP wants to step up his carbon hoofprint, kiwi-- Dunedin on the south island, will be warming up by now, love the kiwis' attitude.

Havana for an antidote to commercialism, Port au Prince for contrast, Port of Spain in trinidad for good time , Puerto Limon costa rica, nice beaches, best weed in the caribbean .............

San Francisco. Fantastic city in a beautiful setting. Small enough to walk across, diverse enough to keep you busy for months. Eat a buritto in the Mission, dim sum in Chinatown, chowder on the wharf. Drink at a dodgy bar in the Tenderloin, cocktails at a fancy rooftop bar. Get marooned on Alcatraz. Take the BART to Berkeley, the Tram to Ocean Beach, the cable car to Russian Hill. Hike to Coit Tower for a great view of the City. Plenty of High Art, and no shortage of low entertainment. Might have to suspend the 'away from riding' requirement to take a hire bike for a quick spin across the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito (take the ferry back at sunset and grab a drink as you re-cross the Bay).

Good point about 2 weeks in a city.
Pick somewhere with things that you are into within easily accessible public transport areas.
    My pick - Bergamo.
It is where the Milanese go for the weekend, and other Italians go for a holiday. Very nice.
Once bored, there is easy train trips to Milan, Lakes Como, D'Iseo & Garda. Then there is Verona, Venice......the list goes on.
None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.

Port au Prince? You're joking, right?
  • In some ways i am joking, but for me the contrast between an american 'sponsored state' and cuba , is staggering, the recent earthquake will obviously appear to have distorted things, so could always go to santa domingo on the other side of the island, still extreme without the rubble.

any of these places will be more memorable than a NY tick box trip

I won't argue with 'memorable' as a description of Port au Prince, but as a potential holiday destination for two weeks...?!
  • two weeks is stretching it a bit  i think my points were , like yours that there are an awful lot of places to 'visit', but to get under the skin you either need to have an 'in' for a place or spend a lot of time there.

My b-in-law comes from the middle of jamaica, up country, its a poor place, but rich in spirit. I not sure about cycling there though, the way those route taxis drive you would be in constant peril.

For me cities are places to get away from, unless you are on the razz.

So many of these places would be so cool to cycle through, in a visual and atmospheric sense, but for the manic bush taxis..
  • Hoopdriver-- if i had the money i would go to cuba for a month, much less hectic.

Went to moldova for a football match this summer, travelled by train for the last leg, looks a very interesting place for a cycle tour, very little traffic in the country , nice climate, tis the poorest country in europe for GDP, but the people we met were humble, honest and a breath of fresh air.

    Moldova? You get around!

Yes, I'd love to travel through Cuba before it all changes.

Have you been to Dominica? Not a great place to cycle but kind of cool and undiscovered.

TBH, if you're a really motivated tourist, you could see a fair bit of Dubai in well under two weeks. Having said that, everyone I know who has gone there on holiday has always gone back, which seems a good recommendation, plus it shouldn't be too hot in October. Just come back from a few weeks there, and was freaking hot when we went out for bike rides! However, if you're going away for two weeks and going east, you can always use Dubai for a stopover, Emirates are a great airline, and generally fairly good value for money.

Personally, I quite like Toronto for city breaks, close enough to Niagara falls for a day trip, Ice Hockey mad and generally friendly place.
You live and learn. At any rate, you live
  • No, not been there , St Croix was the nearest i've been out that way, but that is a US 'protectorate'-- the eastern Caribbean looks very interesting on many levels, life is too short................
