    John D gets it. Again.

And so ends the best GT of the year. It's been a good three weeks.

Have you heard that other unexpected result, just now, Milton?

  • Contador was a legend before this race.

He has cemented that status even more.

7 GTs and he is only 29.

Still enough years left to top Hinault's 10 and Merckx's 11 in an era where dominance is much harder.

    Congratulations to the True Champion.

When the Vuelta last stage ended, I hung on for ages waiting for the podium presentations. (Eurosport, on the computer)

When I was about to give up, after having had to look at endless overhead shots of Madrid (yeah.......big city.......) they finally presented to the stage winner.

Eventually they got to the Vuelta winner. Just him. Up and down, that's IT?

Why don't they do 1st, 2nd, 3rd, on the podium as they do at the Tour? No national anthem, noTHING.

After that many seconds of anti-climax, they did the polka dot. Again, no 1st 2nd and 3rd, just a quick up and down.

I gave up after that. Oh no......EuroSport gave up after that.

WHY don't they do proper podiums at the end of the Vuelta? Surely the riders deserve it and SO DO ALL THE FANS.

Best stage racer of his generation/era. No doubt.

But the comparison to Merckx and Hinault is skewed by the sheer volume of races they won in addition to GTs

Merckx has 19 monuments and 3 Rainbow jerseys.

Hinault is a lightweight with only 5 monuments and 1 WC.

Why do you think dominance is harder in this era?

Since when are cheating drug users true champions ? you gotta be a bit of a weirdo if you genuinly think hes a 'true champion'.

It's Frenchie's stupid comments about Bertie the doper being the true champion that wind everyone who doesn't love Bertie up. If he wasn't so obviously infatuated, we might have a more balance 'commentary' on Contador.
  • So Valverde came 6th in the sprint. Giving him enough points to knick the points and combinations jerseys off Joaquim's shoulders. Joaquim certainly hasn't had that much luck this Vuelta. But credit to Valverde for his determination and effort especially as Cobo was the leader going in.

Contador will next be racing the World Champ RR, TT and TTT. Also Lombardy.

Valverde has always struck me as pretty smart, good for him.
He probably also feels some satisfaction after the events earlier where Sky and Katusha took advantage.

Don't worry too much. He's trolling. In the deepest of his heart he does find AC's 7 finger salute as despicable as the rest of us. Faith in humanity, eh?

I think it’s only fairly recently that a national anthem has been played at the Tour ceremony, I mean the last 10-15 years. I don’t remember one being played decades ago.
And I actually think it wrong one is played nowadays; true the winner has a nationality but it’s a team race not a country-against-country event like the Olympics or the World Cup.
For example, when Evans won last year, he was the only Australian in his team, and without the help of the Americans, Germans, French, Swiss and Italians in his team, he may not have won. So why the Australian anthem - Evans doesn't even live there.

In the Tour de France, they never get into 2nd and 3rd in the ‘minor’ jerseys either.

Of music, this the music nowadays played at the Tour before the winner of each stage and the various jerseys at each stage are presented - you don’t normally get to hear it in TV broadcasts. The riders don’t just walk on the podium out of the blue, this music announces the ceremony is about to begin.

They do proper podium of 1/2/3, they just do all the classification winners first. Blame Eurosport for giving up.
Madrid has best presentations for the fans*, by miles. Giro next, with TdF a very distant nowhere (no fans get to see it).

    * - I define fans as people there to see it. TV viewers are a secondary consideration in my view, but not in the view of sponsors & organisers of some races.

Aye, he's popped his cork there but you can hardly blame him - Vuelta podium girls are the best!

Since when is sharing a bit of one's champagne out of bounds in wedlock?

EDIT: I'm guessing it's all covered in the latest edition of 'a cheater's guide to the podium'
