Rear Axle issue - result of Gumtree purchase

Hi all,
A friend of mine picked up a Specialized Crossroads Sport around 4 months ago and it is currently hanging in the garage where it has been for months. Unfortunately the bike he bought came with an absolute mountain of problems and it seems everytime something is fixed another problem appears.
The bike was taken to Halfords recently and they replaced the bearings in the rear wheel along with a new axle. As time was tight the wheel was not fitted to the bike in the shop and done so back at the house. I've had a look at the bike today and the rear axle measures 142mm which is expected, but it pulls the dropouts together severely when tightened, also almost completely locking the rear wheel as well.
Does anyone know the correct rear axle length for this frameset?

Sounds like some spacers are missing from the axle. What's the width from lock-nut to lock-nut, rather than the whole axle? Like this:

its the distance between the locknuts on the axel is the one to look at, should be 135mm i think it is, possibly that the axel is in a bit too much on the cassette side and the lock ring for the cassette is catching on the frame??
does the wheel spin freely when out of the bike??Timmo.

The wheel spins freely when away from the frame, so it must be the cassette catching or spacers missing. It's a screw in block cassette, but that shouldn't make a difference0

OLD should be 135mm - need to measure this.0

Seems to be that spacers were missing, will pick up a few spares and build it back up nicely0
