buying a crossbike

hi i dont know a lot about cross bikes so any help would be good i what a cross bike for bike to work and racing cross on it and the bike has to come from evans as thats where work are doing the bike 2 work sceam i like the look off this bikes

    I personally really like Whyte bikes, and the cross are no exception. Not had any experience with them personally, but know a few people who have owned and loved them.

    Personally for a cycle to work and/or racing cross, I would definitely go for disc brakes. Both for power in wet conditions as well as maintenance (free). The Whyte comes with AVID BB-7 which seem to be the brake of choice on cross.

    So purely on looks and spec, the Whyte would be my choice! :wink:

    I bought (as a hack) a month or so ago an old steel Jamis Nova. It's a lovely bike and a great deal for a £150 hack. The new model looks pretty sweet:

    If you're racing, go for the lightest. Some of the newer crossers are definitely aimed at the general rider than the racer, but you wouldn't want to shoulder them!

    Whatever you get get disc brakes.

    I'd love to have them on my cross bike but it would basically mean a new bike and the Mrs would not be happy.

    Canti brakes are basically cack and any serious down hilly section and you just hold on and pray.

    Agree with this

    Although I have now given in and learnt to accept that my bike is heavy 10+kg , man up and shoulder the fcuker.

    One day this will be on my Christmas list

    +1 for the Whyte - their CX bikes are loverlee. My mate got one recently and now I want a new one...

    It looks like most of the sizes of those bikes have been discontinued so you might have to wait til next years models are out...

    My friend has a 2011 Kona Jake and loves it. I have no experience of any of the others. I do love my Genesis Croix de Fer though, although I have now converted it from a cross bike to a tourer.
