David Bond - BBC Blog and rewriting the truth

I feel like i'm the only one noticing this...

First of all the BBC Sports Editor spouts a load of negative and offensive tripe on Saturdays 10pm news heavily warping the days events and to top it off getting an earfull from an angry Cavendish to a naive question.

He then writes his blog on the bbc site saying very similar and begins receiving 300 comments with roughly 20% being blocked/removed.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/davidbond/20 ... nt_in.html

On Sunday morning he then rewrites his blog to remove the worst of it and make most commenter’s look irrelevant. There was no apology or recognition that he has done so, the date and time of his blog remains the same as his original post.

A further 100 comments follow pointing this out, a youtube link is added by one commenter to his TV report, you tube then block the video (pressure by the BBC?) and now the video link says 'removed by user'.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=haFlFveUTf4

Today the ability to add any further comments to his blog have been stopped.

I would have thought seedy backtracking, covering up and limiting people’s ability to see what was said would have been noticed by other journalists or people on the interweb, but maybe not?

I thought Cavendish showed remarkable restraint under the circumstances.

I think it's fair to say that he's not my favourite journalist or broadcaster and not just because of the way this has been handled.

Bad journalism from the BBC. Whatever next. :(

I've simply stopped reading their website, since I realised that whenever I saw a story about anything I had actual personal knowledge of, there were massive factual and understanding errors in it. If the stuff I know about has errors, why would I believe anything they say about subjects I don't know about?

It takes a little more effort, but for any given subject I try and take my news from someone who was a) actually there, b) a subject matter expert, or preferably both.

I must admit to getting very fcuked off with the BBC's reporting at the moment.

The news website is constantly looking to play negative stories, whether ticketing, transport, interlopers in the Indian team leading to "demands" (never requests) for apologies, or some other cobblers.

The sports site seems to have become an offshoot of Youtube. There's very, very little in the way of written journalistic accounts of the day's events. Instead it is wall to wall video coverage or video clips. That's not to say I don't like the video stuff, but I would also like to see some analytical commentary on events. The journalistic standard at the moment I'd say is sitting somewhere between the Mail/Express and the Sun/Mirror.

I know it's a big ask, but can't they ask Simon Barnes to write the whole thing?

+1. Come back Mihir Bose - he seemed to take the job seriously. Obviously no single journalist can be expected to have detailed knowledge of every sport, but given that I managed to get my mother-in-law to understand what went wrong with the road race (with her having no previous understanding and me being a fairly low-key cycling fan), the blog and report leaves a huge amount to be desired.

Stick to the sports coverage, avoid the guff.

The only thing that can annoy you then is the RR coverage, and that's done anyway.

Look out for his little black book. Once you have seen it, it will haunt you for ever. Why does he need it when talking to camera? What is in it?
  • I'm not sure it's the poor quality reporting that annoys me, whenever I read general press commenting on sport or even my chosen industry, it normally has a number of errors compared to what you know once you've emerged yourself in something.

I think the issue here is the cover up and back tracking with no appology or action taken.

  • I saw the news and the attitude and tone appalled me.

    With comments such as:

Gold medal failure, The cyclists will have difficult questions to answer.
Racing is rubbish you can\'t relax and enjoy it- because some bugger is always trying to get past.

Which is, frankly, pathetic. It's the sort of thing you'd expect from some armchair fan scrawling uninformed drivel on Twitter and deleting it when they get called out on it.

I was one of the 300+ who commented on Mr Bond's article before it was 'factually updated' - due to the poor quality of the news article I also formally complained to the BBC. I'm looking forward to getting an explanation for such a lazy piece of journalism.

at the euro championships he also did a report predicting racist riots at the games - none of which came to pass. I think he's a journo looking for an angle rather than a proper sports reporter like Champ Kind

  • I think I fully support the idea of Champ Kind for BBC Sports editor, the below is a response to my complaint which though admits David Bond was clueless, they think the report was balanced... to top it off no response to my raigin of the issue of David bond trying to rewrite history after he's made offensive musings online?
Thanks for contacting us regarding our coverage of the Men’s Cycling Road Race broadcast on 28 July.

We understand you were unhappy with Sports Editor David Bond’s post race interview with Mark Cavendish. We appreciate in your view, his analysis of the race was uninformed and negative.

We forwarded your concerns on this issue to our Head of Sports News and he writes in response:

“We believe the report was balanced as it reflected the enormous recent success of the British cycling team and, as such, the sense of disappointment at the lack of a medal. There was no intention to be discourteous to Mark Cavendish after the race. David asked what we believe was a reasonable question and a decision was taken to broadcast Mark Cavendish’s response so that the audience could make their own judgement.”

    In closing he added:

“Clearly David is not a cycling specialist and therefore does not have the same level of expertise in the sport as the BBC’s cycling commentators Simon Brotherton and Hugh Porter. However, this report of the race was intended for a general news audience and we believe it was fair and balanced."

Please be assured we do appreciate your feedback on this issue, and therefore we have registered your complaint on our audience log. This is a daily report of audience feedback that's made available to many BBC staff, including members of the BBC Executive Board, channel controllers and other senior managers.

The audience logs are seen as important documents that can help shape decisions about future programming and content.

Thanks again for taking the time to contact us.

So, from that, can we expect the BBC to start sending their showbiz correspondent's to report from Syria?

"So, why are you, like, fighting and that? It just seems silly, like, because you could just go to the cinema instead, or, like, read heat magazine. That's much betterer than this fightin' and that."

It's the question that the general news audience is asking, isn't it?

I have been a huge supporter of the BBC for many years - Radio 4 & World Service mainly, not TV, but also their website. However, I have noticed a significant downturn in the accuracy and attitude of some of their reports recently; there's currently an issue regarding footballer Andy Caroll's potential (non existent) loan transfer to West Ham that has serioulsy wound up the supporters of both clubs. I hope it doesn't mean an end to their previously reliable reporting standards.

I'm with the poster further up the thread. This mans needs replacing by a respected, insightful, thoughtful journalist like Mihir Bose was and it needs doing fast. He's a complete fuckwit and his version of tabloid bullshit on everything he writes about isn't what we expect from the Beeb.

  • Well done on lodging an official complaint and I'm sorry to see you received pretty much the same patronizing, issue-skirting drivel I was offered when I felt compelled to complain about one of their programs earlier in the year that took a scene of an animal being killed from a natural history program (where it made contextual sense) and used it in a comedy chat show to the delight of the presenter and her audience).

TDF is far more important than the Olympics - David Bond is a typical UK-centric gutter journo - apparently three weeks of racing in France are not as important as a one day race in the UK
