As i have a mountain of spare bits lying around i have decided to build myself a long forked ti hardtail as i miss having one. i got rid of my last ti hardtail due to a poorly back but my back is getting better so here goes. i picked up a pristine 2009 sabbath 5th element frame which i will combine with bits i already own. below is the complete spec, all i'm waiting for is the frame. Here she is all finished, had a quick go lastnight and she feels awesome , really missed having a hardtail. felt a bit weird at first having ridden full suss for a while but within half an hour i didnt notice . weighs bang on 25lbs ,could be a bit lighter but im not going to mess with it as it feels great. the sram x9 set upworks superbly and the avid elixir cr's also feel great, i jst hope they stay that way. having both a hardtail and a full suss should stop me swapping bikes as often as i now have all bases covered. i do think black forks and wheels would have looked better but i already had the white ones and they,re quality items so pointless buying new unless anyone wants to swap

ive got an old 3 inch drop joplin sat doing nothing, its a 30.9mm so ive just ordered a 30.9-31.6 shim. the bike feels like its gonna encourage me to do more than just xc type rides so it will be nice to get the saddle out of the way. will add a bit of weight but worth it. will use a charge spoon with the joplin i'll keep the sdg saddle and post for the times the joplin fails and needs fixing.

just managed to secure a gravity dropper post for a very good price and as i love the one i have on my cannondale i thought it would be rude not to have one on the sabbath. im going to put the joplin on the azonic frame im selling as it fits. after that i cant see anything else i can do to either of my bikes so my next project will be a light xc hardtail probably carbon. i want to build it light but strong enough to cope with my weight.

made a few changes this week. the 10mm thru adaptors turned up for my rear wheel so now i have a much stiffer back end. swapped the fsa headset for a more substantial syncros cromo model with deeper cup insertion, ive done this as the headtube has no real reinforcement, just a precaution. the sdg ibeam saddle and carbon post have been swapped over to a gravity dropper descender 4 inch drop and a charge knife saddle. ive also just picked up a pair of tubeless ready 2.25" red striped nobby nics like the ones i have on the prophet, replacing the ust rocket rons with these should save 240 grams and virtually cancel out the weight gain from adding the dropper post although the new headset weighs 100 grams more than the old one. new weight should still be under 25.5lbs
will post pics when tyres are fitted

stripped the current decals last night and today ordered a new set direct from sabbath. the new decals will be in the style of the current sabbath range so they should look more subtle and classier, i didnt like the big black panel decals. i dont know the name of the fella i spoke to at sabbath today but he was very helpful and spent a good amount of time on the phone discussing various things with me, i came away very impressed, so much so that my next ti road frame will be a new one from them.

ive decided to tone down the bike so off comes the red sram x9 groupset inc brakes and on goes an all black set up consisting of a set of black xt gears inc 10spd shifters, triple chainset and front mech and a slx 11/36 cassette. brakes will be a set of hygia aspire AM, they have 24mm pistons and use shimano pads they also look stealthy in black. rotors will be a pair of the latest avid heat shedding discs. the complete red sram x9 group inc brakes will be in the classifieds inc the red floating rotors and red hope ceramic bb. pics when stuff arrives

Looking really nice as usual, will have to get down to the shop one day and pick your brains about a couple of builds for mates i'm going to undertaking
What if your dreams and fears existed in the same place? What if to get to heaven, you had to brave hell? What if everything you've ever wanted cost you everything you've ever achieved? Would you still go there?

bits have started turning up for the sabbaths re-build. new parts include new all black xt chainset, shifters f/r mechs, 10spd slx 11-36 cassette, clarks self lube 10spd sl chain, gravity dropper and turbo remote unit. wheels will be a pair of as new fulcrum red metal 3's i bought a while since. brakes will be a set of magura marta sl's. the idea is to just have mostly black and silver componentry. only stumbing block is the white revelations, i do have a set of black revelations sat doing nothing but they have a tapered steerer and 20mm thru. decided to spend a bit of money on this frame as i love the ride, so im making it lighter and trying to make it look nicer.

  • Lovely looking thing. Its not a criticism, but i think the decals break up the lines of the frame and dont do it justice or allow it to flow. I love how you have put it together though and i love that stem!

decals have been removed and are being replaced with the newer sabbath decals that are much more subtle , even bare the frame looks much better.

i looked back at previous builds and i kinda got to thinking maybe i was over doing the anodised componentry so im doing my best to resist the lure of the red and gold bits. the prophet was my first attempt at a classier looking bike and i was very pleased at how it turned out. i cant even begin to explain how hard it is when i have box loads of multi coloured bits all over the place begging for a home :)

heres a few pics i took the fading light. will take better ones in daylight. i know the red on the tyres looks a little out of place but the new decals are red and white so when i fit themit should tie together nicely. the big new about this bike is that there is no red anodising on it whatsoever !!!!!!! there is a tiny bit of gold on the middleburn cable oilers but ive ordered some black ones. still waiting on some black forks to come along but the white ones dont look to bad. all in all very pleased with the build, should be a tough do it all hardtail.

  • Looks fantastic! Removing the decals just makes it look like a different bike altogether! Will be interested to see the new ones on.

Not a fan of the coloured rim schwalbes but in the dim light they look a little better ;)

i think the whole bike will look better once i get some black forks, i have two pairs of revelations, one white and a black pair but with tapered steerer so i will hold out for a swap, i might even get the white ones painted. as i have mentioned the new decals have a bit of red in them so the tyres should make sense.

  • Black will certainly add to its testosterone levels! Will look quite "Mad Max". Its quite unusual to see such a muscular looking bike in this material as usually you see Ti built up to look like uber sleek, minimal XC machines.

This frame makes me think this is how GT "should" have designed their frames.

it is quite beefy frame and its a full pound heavier than my old lynskey ridgline, the down tube is massive. but it seems to ride better than the lynskey, it feels much stiffer yet the back end remains comfy. the only way i can describe it is that it just feels like a mountain bike that can be ridden hard, by that i mean it feels like an mtb before they split into all these different categories, it climbs, it descends and handles xc duties with ease. i absolutely love it apart from the forks being the wrong colour. im going to remove the outer ring and replace with a sleek silver cnc'd bash ring ive ordered from the states and i still need to fit the goodridge hoses to the brakes. the girlfriend wants the red striped nobby nics on her p7 so i may let her have mine as i have some plain black rocket ron ust's i can fit.

I've managed to secure a pair of black fox float rlc's for a good price so i can at last rid my bike of the totally out of place white monstrosities plugged into the headtube. gonna fit the goodridge hoses today and then all im waiting for is the bashguard then my bike is complete.

Here she is with the black fox float 32 rlc's fitted and a raceface bash i found lurking under a pile of junk. much happier with the look of the bike now. still need to fit the all black tyres and goodridge braided hoses but too hot to be messing with brakes and tubeless tyres plus ive managed to use all my stans fluid so need to order more in. sorry for crappy mobile pics but camera battery totally dead
