Routes in Hertfordshire

Righty then.
I shall shortly be moving to Potters Bar, which I'm told is in a rather flat place called Hertfordshire.
Now I know Aston Hill isn't too far away, and can only be an hour or so round the motorway to Swinley. I'll grab myself an OS map, but even with one of those it's tricky to work out what's worth a look and where the better spots are to ride.
What I'm really after is does anyone know anywhere nearby that's decent for a few hours XC, don't really want to be driving massive distances if I'm going out somewhere in the evenings. Also anywhere else in the area that's good for some DH, I realise it's quite a flat area so somewhere with an hour and half drive maybe, other than Aston Hill, would be nice to ride at a few places. Will have the 456 down there with me so will be looking to ride as much as possible.

There is Broxbourne woods....though I personally haven't ridden there...0

On the other side of the road from Aston Hill is Wendover Woods - far better in my opinion for XC. Also try Ashridge (near Tring) - there are a number of interesting routes from the visitor centre to the top of Ivinghoe Beacon and backSpecialized Roubaix Elite 2015

I did Broxbourne a couple of weeks ago, didn't stay very long because of the rain and mud! ... it was fun though, worth checking out. I'll be going again when the weather picks up.0
