  • I can just about recall a Raleigh Tomahawk, not sure what followed that but then I had a Raleigh Record racing bike - thought it was the bees knees and i even remember going to the shop to choose it.

Then 25+ years later i got a Carrera Vengeance, which lasted 6 rides and 12 months and is no replaced by my Spesh Pitch which has already seen more action than the Carrera.

I don't know what my first bike was but it was bright green and had Mickey Mouse decals and I thought it was massive. Learnt to ride on that... Then I had a little 20" wheeled Raleigh somethingorother.

First proper bike I bought myself was a Saracen Xcell when I was 16. Thought I was the dogs danglys on that.

Back in the 80's - Raleigh Ultra Burner BMX complete with Skyway mag wheels
Back in the 80's -Raleigh "Team Kellogs" TDF replica racer
90's Raleigh MTB but can't remember the name, it was around at the same time as the lizard by was more of a cyan colour.
90's Peugeot "Tim Gould" replica MTB (its still in my garage but in need of some TLC)

Then I got my first car and bikes became a thing of the past for about 15 years until I got my Hardrock and then moved onto my Cube that I have now.

I also remember building ramps and jumping people as well as crashing into bricks when the ramp collapsed. Happy days :-)

The first bike I can remember having was a Raleigh Gresham Flyer in the late 60's/early 70's.
It lasted me from the age of 6 or 7 until I was 12 when I was bought a 3rd or 4th hand 'sit up and beg' type bike. That lasted about 6 months until I got hit by a bus. Two broken legs and a bike folded in half was the result!

Once I had recovered my dad took me to a local bike shop and asked me to choose a bike. I selected a Motebecane Special Sport (5-speed, drop bars). The old goat knew that was the one I would choose as I had looked at it previously when he was getting his moped serviced. As I was staring longingly at the display model hanging up the shop owner wheeled an already set up bike out from the workshop. I still remember the amazement and excitement of that moment. :)

I then joined the local cycling club, Newport Phoenix, and that Motobecane took me all over the place, touring and racing until I outgrew it.

Next bike was a Raleigh touring jobbie, but I can't remember the model. Had that until I was in my early 20's until it got stolen from the bike sheds when I was in Uni'. That's when I got in to mountain bikes as an 'early adopter'.

First MTB in '88 was a Saracen TuffTrax. £300 and amazing at the time. It was used for everything - leisure, racing and even a tour of Europe one Summer.
After 3 years I retired the Tufftrax, bought a Saracen Kili Flyer Comp frame and built up a bike around it. That was and still is my favourite bike, but it became another victim of some thieving low-life scum-bag. :(
With the insurance money I bought a Raleigh DynaTech Diablo DX Plus. That was another nice bike and I had it for years and years before selling it as I had drifted away from cycling.

In 2008 I decided I needed to get a bike again so bought a Giant XtC 3.5 on the bike to work scheme. That got me back in to mountain biking and served me well until last winter when I went all squishy and bought the Specialized Stumpjumper Comp FSR that I am now riding and loving.

I had something crap, could be considered a BSO. Needless to say it put me off riding for about 10 years, and probably forever if I had not got dragged out to cannock chase with some mates one day and decided to buy a proper bike

I had a lot of second hand, bought of neighbours, generic bikes but only from the age of about 10. Dad saw a horrible accident where a little kid got knocked down and killed and for years just couldn't bring himself to let me have a bike.

Anyway, I did have a Raleigh Grifter at one point, but then I started buying old bmx frames from the free-ads in the local paper, giving them a custom paint job, building them up and selling them on. Thinking back they were probably bloody aweful, but I loved them. Oddly enough I never really learned to do the normal bmx carpark tricks on them, I just used to use them for getting places, but I was very small.

I did at one point have a flat bar road type bike with a Sturmie-Archer 3 speed on it. Was that a Raleigh patent? My first mountain bike was some really multi-coloured thing, which I vaguely remember also being made by Raleigh, but that could be completely wrong. I've actually seen a kid commuting on one recently so I'm going to stop him and try and find out what it was.

Then didn't ride for a while, then bought a tonne of metal with a basket and rod and lever brakes for when I was at Uni. Pretty sure that ended up in the Cam.

I'm very old and my memories are somewhat faded but I recall my first set of wheels being a trike. The type with the pedals connected to the front wheels. A bigger chain driven trike came next and that was followed by my first proper bike. Second hand, no gears but rode it everywhere until it got nicked.

My first full sized bike was a Puch, sit up and beg, with Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub gears and a rack at the back. I used it to cycle to and from school giving mates a "backie" on the rack. I still had that bike when I was 16 and started my first p/t job. I cannot remember what happened to it. I don't remember chucking it, must've given it away.

Then with the money I saved from work I bought my first "racer", a Motobecane. Metallic brown Reynolds tubing and 5 speed shimano gears. I used that for work and general pootling about until it seized. I kept it in my garage up until a few years ago always thinking of doing it up but never got around to it and finally scrapped it.

A pearlescent white British Eagle Mountain bike came next, second hand off my brother. 21 non indexed gears, cantilever brakes and no suspension. I didn't really ever go off road with it, just used it when the weather was poor and for the good weather I bought a second hand racer from a cycling nut mate. It was his old winter bike he'd had it resprayed but I think it was a Aero framed Peugeot with non indexed Shimano 600 group set. I rode my first Manchester to Blackpool on that bike. After a few years I had it blasted and resprayed in Flourescent yellow! I sold the frame this year.

The MTB was tipped when the front wheel rim shredded under breaking nearly killing me! I bought a Scott Yecora next. My first suspension bike. Again I never really went off road much, mainly towpath stuff although I did once take it on the blue route at Dalbeattie Forest. I ran that bike into the ground, stripped it and replaced the drivetrain, XT rear and front mech, SLX shifters and Deore Hollowtech cranks.

To replace the road bike I bought a Surosa second hand off a mate at work. I've updated the groupset to Campag Centaur and this is my fair weather bike and for taking part in the Manchester/Blackpool and Manchester 100 events.

And finally because my lad was into his mountain biking and I'd used hired bikes to try out Mabie Forest I splashed out on a Boardman FS Pro three years ago. Love it. Although I don't go off road as often as I'd like and I'm c**p at it I've had a go at Mabie, Dalbeattie, Llandegla and Gisburn. Plus I've tried a few natural trails. I've had a few spills and embarrasing moments, the worst being an off in a packed public park, on tarmac negotiating a flowerbed roundabout. Lost the front wheel on wet leaves resulting in bent mech hangar, gouged rear mech, ripped clothing huge graze and bruised ego!

1st bike i remember having was a bmx, universal disco stunt in about '93ish,red ,white and white tyres with discs on the wheels, then a 21spd "mountain bike" all i recall about that was it had "OVERSIZE" stickers on it and it was blue, for xmas about '96 , and it got nicked exactly 5 weeks afterwards, replaced that with a "thing " from aldi just so i could get to work, and guess what that got nicked too  and i had the money for another replacement from the boss, then when i turned 18 i got a blue, yellow "mb" british eagle thing, gripshifts front forks the lot  loved it and really dissapoionted when me mum got rid cus i'd reached the age of birds booze and football awaydays,

My Mates and I used to have tatty old scramblers, this would have been the early 70's....... Nobbly tyres, and we used to straighten our forks by sticking the fronts in a drain. Just a rear brake, and we used to ride them in a disused quarry, no fear when your young....
  • Never took any notice of what sort of bike, I was just glad I had one right from being 4 years old,

    Oooh. Had a fair few.

    Townsend - Topeka
Professional - Making Tracks (my fave)
Raliegh - Activator II (Wow! Suspension! Sort of)
Raleigh - Max Ogre (Weighs a ton, still works)

All of which were sat rotting in my parents shed so i harvested them and built one working bike from the parts for my Dad to use. I don't think it has moved....

nevermind, it was a fun little project.

My first loved bike was a Rally Tomahawk. My Dad tricked us all one year by saying he was going to get our bikes re-sprayed for Christmas & we had to pick a colour. Being a massive fan of Smokey & the Bandit, I chose black & gold - naturally!

Christmas morning, I was presented with a brand new Condor BMW (NOT the Hoffman BMX's, these pre-dated his career) with a chrome frame & black & gold padding etc. I was in heaven!

    GazoldBMX.jpg

No Idea where these bikes came from, as there's nothing on the net about them. Shame, as I remember them never going wrong & being a quality bit of kit. I especially remember the 'mushroom' grips & shin killing vector pedals (basically, DMR V8's)

This was eventually replaced with an Emmelle mountain bike of some kind. I loved this too, as it had gears!!! Such a shame that it was a pile of crap & fell apart.

After this, I'd reached my teens & found the lure of Motocross bikes too much & never had another pedal bike until I was in my 30's!
  • I dreamed of a raleigh Vektar. . . . .

In my 30's now and started off with a standard blue effort with white tyres and stabilisers.

There is OLD video footage of me trying to pull a jump on it aged 5 when going over a tree stump (yes there was a fall and many many tears).

Over time I then had a passed down Tomahawk, Chopper and Grifter (Big family full of older cousins)

From there I progressed on to this.
    85_06a.jpg

Which was pride and joy from about 9-14.

At 14 I then got one a delightful pink and green Apollo Kilimanjaro from Halfrauds, this bike weighed as much as a sherman tank and had the manuverability of one but it was my first real mountain bike and I loved it.

Knowing that this would never be suitable for my needs I spent the next 2 years saving up £600 with the intentions of buying a Marin Muirwoods and accessories.

Father however said that £600 on a bike was ridiculous and restricted me to a £300 (of my own money!) budget and I ended up with a base model Specialised Hardrock

    specialized_hardrock_95_213.jpg

That but without the suspension forks

I spent the next 6 months and a further £300+ replacing things that broke. the list included

    Front forks
    Rear wheel
Rear gears (went from 18 speed to 21 so needed new shifters)
    New brakes
    A plethora of new tyres
    New crackset and bottom bracket

I then on a whim added a Daves chain device and a Girvin Flexstem.

The bike was awesome and my father still rides it to this day.

I then went to Uni and discovered beer, kebabs and the missus.

2 kids further on I decided I wanted to start again so at the ripe old age of 26 I got a Kona Cindercone.

It was stolen 3 years later from my locked shed

Insurance replaced the bike and I added to it and upgraded to a Specialised FSR XC

It was stolen 3 years later from my new and improved locked shed with additional locking set up inside (ground anchor through the floor etc...)
The scumbag who nicked it was caught and they recovered my roadbike (Felt Z90) that was stolen at the time but he admitted the the FSR was a steal to order and was already long gone.

I have since been paid cash for the the FSR and due to financial limitations at home I am currently mountain bikeless.

The Felt is on a turbo trainer in the dining room being used for fitness and will be sold shortly to enable me to invest in a new mountain bike and my eldest daughter has now become a keen cyclist and at 8 is desperate to go round the local woods and canal paths with me as thats seen as off road.
She is already drooling over bikes with big fat tyre and burly suspension and has already pointed out the flaws in her own bike that prevents her from doing wheelies and attempting jumps.
