Shimano XT hub and brake movement.

Recently bought a new Cube LTD SL fitted with Shimano XT hubs and brakes. I notice, while the rear brake is applied there is slight rotational movement of the back wheel. About enough to allow the bike to move 5 mm forward and backwards. We also have a Genesis Core with SLX hub and brakes which does not allow any movement. Is this right.

I can't see the pads moving, seemed to be play between the rotor and hub, I'll have to check the rotor for lateral movement tonight. thanks.

Are the hubs splined - there is often a little bit of movement on the splines. Make sure the locknut is tight.

I'll check tonight and then plan a visit to LBS if anything untoward.

There is no lateral movement of the wheel or rotor and every thing seems tight, have also noticed the front is the same. I'll take it to the bike shop for a check up and see if any other XT fitted bike do the same.

    Lateral? You mean rotational?

If the wheel moves there has to be some.

If you can not see any it will be the pads moving in the calipers.

    Normal.

Just to add to that, there should be no movement when the locknut is tight enough.

Also you some times get settlement, forward, so locking the brake and pushing backwards can loosen it.

Lateral means perpendicular to rotation, i.e. if a wheel wobbles it has lateral movement. (Don't need to explain perpendicular do we)

Campaign for plain English called... They said lateral movement is side to side movement ;)

Yes the rim has lateral movement so them it would be bearings.

But I don't think that is what you are saying? As you called it rotational in your first post.

    So which is it?

    Thanks for your replies.
Nicklouse - I thought I'd made it clear, there was no lateral movement. Sorry if that was confusing. Any way, I had the bike shop check things, they tightened the lock nuts and there is no play now, rotational or lateral.

But you need to check things - get a cassette tool and DIY. You don't need an LBS to tighten a nut.

I agree, however since the bike is brand new and the bike shop is quite local for me, I thought I'd let them sort it.

Mine does it too. Caused by the holes of the rotor being marginally larger than the centre lock adaptor on whch they sit.

Tighten down the locking nut to minimise this - but be careful not to overtighten and strip the thread (I learnt the hard way)

His doen't have an adapter, they are splined hubs.
