Chain shortening

I have just fitted a new KMC X8-93 chain; only to find its way too long, on the smaller chain ring and the 11t cassette cog, the chain slides along each other on the rear derailleur, and b tension adjustment makes no difference on the 28t cog, where the chain rubs the jockey wheels making a terrific noise.
Am I right in thinking for the KMC X8-93 all I need is a chain breaker to push the pin out?
