Hi, I'm new to this site and read with interest the trip up Essex Way in Benfleet. I think 2 or 3 people said the gradient is 7%. Now excuse me if I'm a bit thick, but does that mean the gradient is 1:7? If not, does anyone know waht the gradient is? I was wondering also about Vicarage Hill, Church Hill in Thundersley and Leigh Hill, all of which I think are pretty steep.

No, it means it's 7:100, which is not as steep at 1:7, it's more like 1:14 and a bit. I think.

    A 1:4 hill has a 25% gradient.
    A 1:5 hill has a 20% gradient.

    So a 7% gradient is about 1:14.3
