Hi there, i have a 2009 trek fuel ex 6.5.
yesterday after a ride, i cleaned my bike, only to find hair line cracks at the right hand side rear drop out. also on the brake mounts on the rear of the bike, and on the joint where the drop out attaches to the chain stay.
I've attached some photos, could you possibly tell me how you think these would of happened, as to prevent it happening agan.
and as soon as my LBS opens, where i got it from, ill be on the phone.
Any ideas what trek will do? would they send me a replacement part of my frame?

Doesn't look good - should be under warranty, but I have to say - a lot of corrosion in places. This may have helped some of this along.

corrosion? where you looking, doesnt seem to be any on the frame, it fully clean, there is still mud on it.
Would they give me a replacement chain stay part of the frame?0 -
The dropouts and disc mount holes look like heavily oxidised aluminium, like salt has got in there.

yea i am, got it from my local bike shop, ill try give it a thorough clean0

Yeah, clean it up and have a word. They should at the very least give you a new chainstay.
Oh, make sure the bearing arene't seized too, as this can crack frames.0 -
Trek are pretty good at replacing frames/frame parts under warranty.....Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

yea all the bearings are fine, recently replaced, and ive checked them, and they are always greased up, with bearing grease.
whats the situation, would trek want my whole frame? do i send it off to them? or do i just send photos?
the shop i bought it from is shut on a wednesday, typical.

what do you think caused it? i cant think how the brake mount has failed? its only a 160mm rotor at the back, so great amount of stresses? and what do you think about the drop outs and the weld?0

You have to contact the shop that you bough it from, see what they say.
Could just be one of those things, a small percentage of all most all frames fail.0 -
The early ABP bikes have been known to crack seatstays at the brake mount. Later versions that year got a revised seatstay. The chainstay is not a known fault with Fuel Ex's, but it is usually covered. As I can't see the photos, I can't give a definite answer, but what usually happens is the bike shop will take photos, log a claim with Trek and there will usually be a replacement part within 2 weeks for you.0
