can i use 7900 cassette (12-23) and 7900 chain with 7800 rear mech and 7800 sti s or do i have to keep it all the same thanks

    Just can't use campag with fishing gear is the only rule

    I think the only bits that don't work so well mixing 7800/7900 are the STi levers and brake calipers (different pull ratios) and sti levers and front derailleur (different number of stops).

    Absolutely right. 7900 shifters have to be paired with 7900 brakes and front mech.
    All other components can be 7800.

    What the OP is doing is fine.
