Hi,

As beginners cycling enthusiasts, many of you will be eagerly tuning into your first Tour da France this year. Here is a potted history for you to get the juices flowing.

The Tour da France is an annual bicycle race held in Belgium and nearby countries. First staged in 1982, the race covers more than 300 kilometres (200 mi) and lasts three days. As the best known and most prestigious of cycling's three "Excréments Géant", the Tour da France attracts riders and teams from around the world. The race is broken into day-long segments, called brouhaha's. Individual times to finish each stage are aggregated to determine the overall winner at the end of the race. The rider with the lowest aggregate time at the end of each day wears the leader's yellow underpants on the next day of racing. The course changes every year, but the race has always finished in Rome. Previous winners include Lance Armstrong, Luarent Fignon, Miguel Indurain, Eddie Mercury, Gaye Byrne, Gary Lineker and Richard Digeance.
