Campagnolo cables - for 2009 levers - some advice please

I bought new cables (outers and inners today) for my latest build. Exactly the same name on the box when compared to my old cables box (yes, I keep everything): "For Ultra-Low Friction (TM) Ergopower (TM) control levers.

These new derailer outers have metal ferrules pre-mounted, but I know these won't fit into my levers. Trim them off, easy... but the instructions say that any cutting should be done at the other end of the outer?

I have compared diameters of new and old and they're the same, so I think I have bought the right kit.

Anyone got any recent experience on this? I simply can't remember what I did 3 years ago on the previous build.

Are my 2009 levers Ultra-Shift? Ergopower? Both!?

Cheers

Ben

EDIT: I have just looked in the contents leaflet and it says the gear outers are 4.5mm rather than the 4.1mm, which I think they need to be... :/

Okay, I have done some digging. My levers are Ergopower Ultrashift and hence require the 4.1mm diameter gear cable outers.

So this box I have here, despite saying for use with "Ergopower Ultrashift", contains gear cable outers which are too thick.

Will 0.4mm make a difference? Will the cables still fit in the lever body? I would try, but my bike is at the other end of the country.

The new ultrashift/powershift will fit in the old ergo levers but not vice-versa. If you have new levers (2011 onwards) you do need the small ones.
In your case I dare say that everything should fit no problem. The bit of play will be offset by the tape you use to secure the cables to the bars... I am pretty sure I have ultra shift on my 2000 and something 9 speed Veloce ergos. Keep the ferrules for the frame side of the cable... you'll need them. Don't insert ferrules in the ergo lever, never!

    Thanks for the reply, Ugo.

I have had a look at the compatibility chart in the Campagnolo tech documents and "EP Ultrashift" (what I have)requires 4.1mm outers. These outers (bought today, so new stuff I presume) claims to include 4.5mm outers, so I think the box contains the wrong stuff!

Fingers crossed they'll fit. Maybe the fact my levers are 2009 will save me having to return the cables and let me eventually finish this build!

I have a ultrashift low friction bla bla cableset with the 4.1 mm outers and no ferrules attached. I am happy to swap it for an older one, if yours doesn't fit, as long as you don't cut bits etc...

PM me if appropriate. I will be on hoilday for 10 days though

Thanks. I am taking them back to the shop tomorrow morning... see what they can do.

Would you be up for selling the cableset, if I end up with a refund?

Yes, the cableset is redundant... it's a 2011 Ultarashift... the latest... only thing, I am away for the next couple of weeks, so if you are in a rush, it's a problem

I got a refund this morning and went to another shop where they were a) interested and b) knowledgable.

    So sorted.

You know what, it was always my LBS really. But the other shop was handy with Friday's time constraints.

I should have gone straight to the trusted LBS. Lesson learned. :D
