Differance between SLX/Deore BBs?

About to buy a new BB as my current one it seems is on its way out.

Given that the cranks have side to side play and tightening the black cap isnt removing it, even when over-tightening it which ofc you shouldnt do.

But whats the differance between the Deore BB51 and thier XT/SLX BB70 ??

Its £10 more so wondering if it worth it.

Not alot. Slightly better seals as far as I can tell.

Slightly lighter as well. (85 v 98g from memory)

I presume you loosened the lock bolts before tightening the pre-load adjuster? Tightening the preload should remove side to side play even with shot bearings, so sounds like something else if wrong.

  • Ok so seals could be better that probably worth the tenner then.

On the side to side play within the cranks i did loosen the two lock bolts(took them completely off too) before tightening the Pre-load ajuster(black nut).

I think it must be the bearings within the BB as i have had the BB now for 6months+ so seems like that is the cause, though i cannot think of anything else causing side to side play other than pre-load nut being loose.

Once the bearings start to go, you can tigthen but you will get play in them almost straight away, also did you push home the locking pin on the plastic tab?

you can dismantle the bb and repack the bearings with grease but again only a temp fix.

I find SLX BB's last at least twice as long as Deore. Much better seals.

Only bit of bling on my bike is an XTR BB. IMO worth the extra - seals are much better.

I've decided to go for an XTR mech next myself. Only seem to be getting 6 months out of a Deore BB
