Hi. I'm on leave all next week in Islay and wondered if anyone could offer some advice on where to ride on the island? We are staying near Portnahaven and would welcome any suggestions for a decent off road route. Likewise, where not to venture? Thanks very much.

I couldn't find much and ended up cycling on singletrack roads and a few winding paths. With an OS Explorer map I might have pieced together some kind of route but didn't see anything obvious. I did head into a forest one day but the way was barred with eight feet high deer fencing and gates. No Forestry Commission over there. Islay would be better suited to a cross bike, enabling you to tackle some of the worn out tar on roads to nowhere. Sorry to be less than helpful! I did have a great time but was left in need of natural tracks.

I have a nasty feeling that if you go off-road on Islay you might just sink...

Thanks anyway - appreciate your responses. I've got an OS map so will just head up North & wing it. Cheers.
