Get a file and file it smooth.

Ouch, that looks nasty. I'd whip off the tyre & tube and sand / file the sharp bits down and see what it looks like. Then remount the rubber and pump it up carefully. If there's any sign of the tyre bead unseating at that point I'm afraid I'd bin it. Can PX sell you a replacement rim??

If planet X could sort you a replacement rim, it wouldnt be worth rebuidling. The wheels are dirt cheap, £130 per set. Thats the beauty of them - you damage them, you throw them out.

But I'd try filing first, it may be perfectly fine afterwards.

I'm afraid I would bin that. Even after you have smoothed the edge, you've still lost the lip for that section of the rim and it will be a "weak point" for the tyre becoming unseated.

  • Ok, ill try that, its not cutting into the tire at all. I can see the brake pads wearing down though. Its slightly untrued down at that point 3-4mm. hmm 50 quid for the front set.I just imagine that point is now weak, and the worse case is it will be the critcal point then break up when Im going 30mph! No helment will save my llife. hmm You can see the black part of the rim is also bulging outwards.

If i true it its going to cost me £14 quid.

Bin it. It's not a difficult decision from where I'm standing - not as if it's a Campagnolo Bora.

It'll last. You admitted you had let the tyre pressure drop too low.

I have hit some horrendous potholes in my time and the rims have survived.

  • Yes I think the pressure was about 60 psi, it states a minimum of 100psi! No wonder.

At 60psi it must have felt almost like you were riding with a puncture! Was the bike wallowing on corners at all?

Shame, but like others have said, at least it wasn't something expensive, also you aren't injured.

If it was the rear, you could have at least had some salvageable parts (the rear freehub). Have you bought a pair or just a single?

If you bought a complete wheel then might you have a hub and spokes for sale?
    More problems but still living....
  • Sold the hub amaferanga, so not too bad. Yes got the new wheel today, just the front. Very fast, the old wheel was nto straight, felt like i was riding on a wooden wheel. £50 so not to bad. I had a look at the rim, it wasnt too bad. i was able to straighen it. But i was scared it would just smash whern im going 30mph!
