Cycling in Italy

Hi Folks,

I and 3 others are planning to go to Italy next september for a cycling holiday. Driving from UK down through france, the other people are coming from Poland.

Can anyone recommend some great places to cycle in italy. We are not cycling pros but can take on a challenge or two but mainly we are there for the fun and the holiday.

i'm assuming your mates will be coming via Austria. The Veneto (Dolomites) has loads to offer. From there you could go on towards Trento Verona, Ferrara etc, or to the Lakes - or both. Basically aim for the Brenner or Reisen passes, or to Cortina d'Ampezzo.

The Lonely Planet Cycling Italy book is well worth checking out.

If it's iconic climbs you want then I'd either pick somewhere like Arabba or Bormio.
I've done some routes in both those areas and they're written up here if you want to take a look.

Wouldn't like to choose between them, but I guess Bormio was special as I'd wanted to climb the Stelvio and Gavia for years. Can recommend the hotels we stayed in on those trips too.
