Bike is going to single ring 34t upfront with chain device. Would you add a bash guard?

Saves your legs n laces and you'll snag less on logs etc. I think it looks better than just a small'ish ring showing too.

Defo, as DodgeT says it will stop the ring catching stones, logs etc and also the ring cutting your leg to ribbons.

But on a single ring up front, the chain would be covering teeth at all time and top and bottom of ring will be covered by chain device.

Fair point, bit you'll still strike the chain on rocks etc, get yer laces tangled up and nice oily marks on yer like :)
Depends I suppose if your a weight weenie?
  • I had a bash on the edison with the SLX double. When I took it off it was like new. Had never seen any action at all (which of course is down to my legendary mad skillz). Although I know it saved me from injury a few times.

I'm now changing to XT 10sp double, with a bigger big ring (40-28). Going to be using a bionicon c-guide v.02 chain retention thingy, but I'm pretty sure I can't use a bash anymore. So I'm going to have to say goodbye to my calves.

Might've been mine I guess - https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/_ ... directlink - 9 stitches in my calf, left a pretty good scar. I have a bashguard these days (and also would be unlikely to make the mistake in quite the same way).

no need for a bashguard IME with a 34T chainring and e*thirteen LS/LG1

would only fit a bashguard on a double

no, it was far bigger than that, had about quarter imprint / tear across a leg, you probably could have worked out the number of teeth from the picture, interesting on to the forehead on the Google search

I'd say yes, mine has saved my leg a couple of times. The first ride after fitting it I had an imprint of bash ring across my right calf after losing it, wouldn't like to think what the outer chainring would have done!

As has been said though, if you're running a single ring, shouldn't be a need as there won't be any exposed teeth. Could only be a problem if the chain gets thrown off the chainring, can't see it happening enough to warrant a bash though.

Well I've put the bashguard on looks and fits fine with the Superstar laser chain device. Decided to put it on just as protection for chain and ring rather than for me. Only thing is the ring I have is a great looking Renthal ring. Shame to cover it up.
