Should i repair or buy new?

Hi,

I have a retro GT Zaskar 9spd. It currently has Shimano ST-M750 XT Shift and Brake Lever Set but the right gear lever to go up in gear has started slipping. when i push it up it dosn't do anything, I can feel it slipping past whatever is inside that makes the gear change.

Can this be repaired or am i just better off replacing them, I have been recomended the following replacements...

    Remove the base cover cap of the non functioning shifter on the the combo lever and work in a few drops of oil.

    If the thumb lever feels very slack in operation, then tighten the hex nut that is directly under the base cover cap.

    Hopefully, that will fix it.

    Thanks for the advise, When i take off the cover there is a cog with teeth round it, then there is a small metal piece attached to the lever that gets pushed up or down when you press the lever. Nothing seems to be worn but that piece of metal misses a lot of the teeth which means i am not changing gear

    I was trying to attach a picture of the mechanism but it wont work for some reason.
    The small hammer head shaped bit of metal does not seem to have enough tension on it to keep it going between the teeth on the cog. Neither the teeth or the metal piece are worn. Everything looks fine. Could that mean the cables need looking at?

    It won't be the cable, that is pulled when you rotate the circular part, it plays no part in the pulling!
