Can my Brooks be fixed????

I have just been given an old Brooks saddle by my dad, is about 25 years old but the trouble is that he had left it out in the Spanish sun for the last 6 months and it looks a bit worse for wear. There does not appear to be any cracking, is there any way I can breath life into the old girl? A quick Google search shows a couple of recommendations for tipping engine oil over it (even Sheldon Brown has recommended this) is this really an option?
Thanks

  • Brooks sells its very own treatment, the Proofide... just use plenty of it on both sides of the saddle, massage it and allow it to soak through. If you are on a budget you can use plenty of vaseline. Leather is skin, so the treatment is not dissimilar to that of a sunburn.

PS: it will never look like new, but it will be functional
pps: your dad probably forgot how expensive these saddles are!

Cheers, I have vaseline in the house so will give it a go 1st. I think you are right about my dad not knowing, apparently he says that the bike has stickers saying Reynolds with some numbers after and was given to him by someone who was a semi pro. Think I may need to take it off his hands :)
