Hi guys,

I have recently received a new 2011 Cannondale Jekyll Carbon frame as a warranty replacement for my 2009 Cannondale Rize Carbon frame in which i found an hairline crack in the paint on the top tube.

Although it appeared like it might just be a paint crack, Cannondale USA made the decision to replace the fame on the back of the pictures and a engineers visual report done by CSG (Cycle Sport Group - Cannondale's distributor in the UK). So a BIG thanks for Cannondale and CSG UK for covering my back, and standing by their warranty.

Here's the crack-
Cracked%252520Rize.JPG

Due to order back logs and the apparent worldwide scarcity of the Jekyll frames and shocks, it took about 9 weeks for the warranty replacement procedure to be completed, but i was more then happy to wait once i discovered i was to be getting upgraded to the 2011 Jekyll, as their was no more Rize/RZ Carbon framesets left
I will also admit i'm a little apprehensive about putting money into, and building up a frame that i have never ridden, as i normally demo ride everything i can before finally buying ( I could not find any Jekyll's to demo in the UK), so this is definitely new ground for me in that respect.

Its going to be another few weeks or so before i finish the build, as im still collecting and deciding on a good few components.
The only components im planning on bringing over from my Rize will be my Red Formula R1's ( do you think they will look cool or clash with lime green frame? ) and my Cannondale BB30 SI Carbon Crankset which have only been used on 2 previous rides. My Fox TALAS 140mm Forks, will also be getting used for while, as I just had them serviced and upgraded at Mojo to 2011 spec a few weeks before the crack in the frame appeared. But I plan to replace them with TALAS 150mm 2012's with a full 1.5 steerer and Kashima early in the Newyear.

Awesome frame, but the white bars, stem & grips and red brakes will ruin it!
  • Looks like it's going to be a nice build, but like the guy above, it could be a bit odd with the different colors on there. Should be nice and light though, and ride well, so that's most important.

lovely looking frame, quite shocked by the weight though, thats a good 200g heavier than my mojo HD, and that shock is like having 3 rp23's attached to your frame

should be a fantastic build though, definitely think the red needs replacing with green, and white rims all the way 8)

    Cheers the feedback :)

As i said in my post, the Red R1's were bought originally for my Rize, hence the colour. The first thing i thought when i was told it would be a White and Green Jekyll was getting was the possible colour clash with my brakes ( I was hoping for the Matt Black and white Jekyll, but with it being a warranty replacement, i was given no choice)..

My plan was to replace the Red R1s with the black Formula The One's, but now seeing the frame and brakes together, i think contrast could look kinda cool  . The One's still might happen, but i will just wait until i see the bike fully built to decide.

I'm at a loss why you think that white bars, stem and grips will ruin it though, as their is more white on the frame then green. They were all parts for the Rize, but only the stem was used, but they all could change anyway when it comes to getting the Jekyll to fit me right.

The Jekyll frame is very fat in real life, hard to really capture how fat in pictures as everything is oversized. I was at my LBS yesterday borrowing the use of their headset press to press in the BB30 bearings, and all the mechanics thought it was a down hill frame..

Looking at your Mojo thread (beautiful bike by the way, stunning, i would love to do a Mojo build with my excess parts, so i might be quizzing you for some info in the near future :P ), it seems the frame weights are closer then you think.

Its not really a fair comparison though, as your Mojo HD is a medium and my Jekyll is a large.

My Jekyll frame with shock complete weight is 2.89kg vs 2.83kg for your Ibis.

    Jekyll%252520Carbon%252520-%252520with%252520shock%252520-%252520%2525202890g.JPG
    Jekyll%252520Carbon%252520-%252520with%252520Shock%252520-%2525202890g.JPG

Just for comparison , my old Rize Carbon Large frame, with RP23 came in at 2605g. ( i weighted my RP23 with mounts and bolts at 291g)
    Rize%252520-%2525202605g.JPG
    Rize%252520-%2525202605g..JPG

But its interesting to note that without there respective shocks, the Jekyll Carbon is lighter then Rize by about 100g. (Jekyll Carbon Large frame without shock - 2262g Vs Rize Carbon Large frame without shock - 2363g)

You didn't happen to weight your Medium Mojo HD frame without its shock did you ?

Your right about the Fox DYAD being a chunky bugger, its about double the weight of the RP23, but it is 2 shocks in 1 with it having two switch-able separate circuits ( rebounds for each circuit) between 150mm and 90mm.

Glad you liking it. Just getting desperate to get it built and to ride it now!

I thought it would be a good idea to try and give an impression on how fat the frame is for anyone who has never seen one in real life, which i guess i quite a few of you. So a few pics with it next to a standard width (200g) baked bean tin (other brands are availible )

A riding buddy tried to convice me already that getting new brakes is a must, just before he said that Red R1's would look perfect on his bike

To be honest, when i test mounted the rear caliper on the frame, i thought it looked kinda cool, a vivid contrast lets say   . But i will wait until i see the complete bike built before making a final decision..

When the frame and shock arrived, it did not have the proprietary high pressure shock pump (up to 600psi - yes really) with it, so i had to order one through my Cdale dealer, it arrived today.

It was a special order and cost £25, but seems very nicely made and finished. But its also a good bit bigger then your standard size shock pump as you will see in the pic.

  • I think the red could look quite funky actually. That crankset is a thing of beauty!

Loving the bean tin idea! Could be great for trails! Personally id go for the fridge pack bottle instead. Easier use with re-sealable lid :P

HAHAHAHA.. i think you could be on to something with the fridge pack :)

Maybe i should try and send a link of this tread to Heinz, and see if they fancy giving me some sponsorship for my free advertising

White parts look really cheap and nasty. They tend to make a nice bike look like a halfords special. Im sure with some black bits on there, the red brakes wouldnt look too bad.

didnt weigh it without the shock but i know my rp23 is about 270ish grams (mate weighed one the same size), as for the size difference not really comparing them tbh, just thought considering all the hype it would have been lighter

the new formula r0's are in silver and look the bollooocks, plus are very very light and even more powerful than the ones, had a go on a pair t'other day and was very impressed

as for wheels tune hubs on crest rims would be a super build, admittedly i only weigh 65kg but my crests have seen some hard abuse over the past 7 months and havent flinched one bit, mega impressed so much so i just bought a new set on superstar hubs for my hardtail :D nobby nics all the way too, now on my third pair and i wont be changing to another tyre anytime soon, they grip well, are dead easy to set up tubeless as i have just done and are very light, and seem to last well too.

any questions about the HD just gimme a Pm but frankly it just rips :D

I'm glad that a few others on here are thinking the red will work ok, i was starting to think i was loosing the plot

Anyone got any thoughts on what colour of Tune hubs they would go for if it was there choice? I'm pretty much set on white rims.

I was thinking gold first, then lime green hubs, but the colour does not match with the frame very well, so im now leaning towards white (makes matching to other bikes easy also).

    Here's some samples of the choices;

Most of the marketing hype around the Jekyll was more about its stiffness (Centre-stiffness in Cdale speak  ), not so much bragging about its weight. I guess the heavy custom shock really screws up this bike for the weight-weeny purists.

The 2009 Rp23 of my Rize was in the same ball park. 257g with the mount spacers, then i was 42 grams for the pair of shock bolts. Of course the mount spacers and bolts will vary a bit in weight between different bikes.

The Formula R0's are very cool, i read about them on Pinkbike a few months back. But what caught my eye even more was the Formula employees :)

I was going to ask you about your Crests and how hard you have ridden them. do you hit jumps, drops and kamazaee rock gardens on them? I'm close to 90kg in my typical riding gear, but im not a clumsy rider, pretty smooth most of the time, but i do perfer to be over-biked rather then under-biked.
My original plan was to go with Crests, Tune hubs and Sapim spokes which will build into a 1300g wheelset. But after talking with a few people about it, i have now been leaning towards Archs, just for that little extra stiffness and durability. Arch, tune and Sapim will come to around 1460g, still plenty light for what is pretty much an AM wheel.

I'm a huge fan of Nobby Nic's also, had s few sets on my Rize over a couple of years. I guess i just fancy trying something different, and a few people i trust when it comes to biking stuff have been saying great things about the current Continental tires with the Black Chilli compounds.
If i can't decided on what Continetals to go for, i will prob just play it safe and get Nobby Nic's but in a 2.4 width.
  • What about Easton Haven Alloy or Cabon Rims?
Heard great things about them, and they look gorgeous too!

    Hey buddy, hows things?

Recently i have had my eye on Easton Haven Alloys, mostly due to also loving their looks :)

Although the Haven Alloys are meant to be very stiff and ride fantastic, i still have some concerns about the hubs.

Also, Havens come in at around 1650g, an Arch / Tune / Sapim build would be around 1450g (1300g if i go for Crests).

I personally would not go down the Carbon rim path on an AM bike right now. They would make me ride in a hesitant manor, as i would be worried about damaging them due to their great expense.

lovely looking frame, quite shocked by the weight though, thats a good 200g heavier than my mojo HD, and that shock is like having 3 rp23's attached to your frame

should be a fantastic build though, definitely think the red needs replacing with green, and white rims all the way 8)

Your right about the Fox DYAD being a chunky bugger, its about double the weight of the RP23, but it is 2 shocks in 1 with it having two switch-able separate circuits ( rebounds for each circuit) between 150mm and 90mm.

didnt weigh it without the shock but i know my rp23 is about 270ish grams (mate weighed one the same size), as for the size difference not really comparing them tbh, just thought considering all the hype it would have been lighter

the new formula r0's are in silver and look the bollooocks, plus are very very light and even more powerful than the ones, had a go on a pair t'other day and was very impressed

the crests seem really strong, ive thrown them down my new local DH course and smashed them round most centres in the uk and they've stood up to everything ive thrown at them, and im certainly not the smoothest of riders

judging by the weights you state, stan's are doing a new version of the arch for 2012 which would be the rim i'd go for, normal arch's seem pretty pointless as they are heavier but also narrower than crests and not much stronger, the new arch addresses this

I did find it a little strange when i first noticed that the tire bead width on the Crests is wider then on the Arch's ( although the overall rim width is the same).
I guess its due to the Crests being a newer more advanced design.

    Crest
    Rim-Diagram-Crest.jpg

    Arch
    Rim-Diagram-Arch.jpg

I have not had the chance to do a back to back comparison myself, but people who have say that the Arch is a slightly stiffer feeling rim, especially in the fast turns. And logic suggests that due to it having more material and weight it should be more bit more robust, im sure the Crests counter this some what with their more advanced design.

I heard about the new Arch Ex rims back during the EuroBike press reports, but i have been told that they will not be shipping until Jan 2012 at very earliest. I really can't wait that long, i have been waiting long enough to get this build up and riding. Maybe due to this the decision has been made for me for going with Crests.

Seems like the Arch Ex will be pretty much Crests with some extra internal bracing?

Arch Ex are on the left - smaller bead hook, changing the inside width from 19mm to 21mm.

Video of Jerome Clementz talking about the setup of his 2011 Trans-Provence winning Cannondale Jekyll.

I'm really loving his custom paint, its giving me very bad ideas  , but i think it would make my valuable lifetime warranty void..

Hey, well not much has been happening these last few days, i'm waiting for a few things to arrive, and also few parts to come into stock on chain reaction..

How was Afan Forest? How was your Jekyll? Did you both make it back unscaved ? :)

I came home tonight to find the Downtube and Frame protector kit i ordered about 5 days ago from the US had been delivered. :)

    I went for the Crank-Skins 12mill Pro Pack Clear. $23.55 delivered ( £14.98)

    http://crankskins.com/12milthprocl.html

I used more or less the same kit, but the 8mill version on my Rize and found it be pretty good. Hard wearing, sticky enough so no pealing at the edges even after seasons of muddy scottish riding , and it also did its primary job of defending against the inevitable rock strikes, chain slap very well.
I also really like these kits as they are great value and very generous with the amount of film and patches. The down tube patch alone is 780mm x 98mm.

I also previously fitted their specially shaped crank skin clear flim's on my Carbon Si Crank arms.

If anyone is fancying trying some Crank Skin products let me know, as i been given 20% Off coupon that's to be used in the next 4 weeks.
