They are both at the bottom end of the Shimano Range....the Alivio is the better of the two....how much do you intend spending ? and what bits do you need as some better spec components may be in reach0

i want to spend cheap because i just only want to try how the geared setup feels. i am contemplating between the 2 low ends in view of the possibility that i might not like it and ended up ss setup again.

What bike do you have? You can mix and match too.0

Wouldn’t it be easier just to try a bike with gears first? It will feel similar.
And much much better than SS.I don't do smileys.
