Rear mech indexing puzzle

Noticed the rear mech 'jumping' in some gears so decided to adjust the indexing, which I've done with no problem many times before (Ultegra 9 speed).

This time when I get it sunning smoothly on the bottom 5 sprockets it jumps about all over the place on the top 4 and vice versa. I changed the cable but the problem is still there, nothing is damaged as far as I can see. Any help appreciated.

    +1

Or the spring in the rear derailler may be a bit gunked up. Give it a clean and lubricate it with some teflon spray.

When I had this problem it turned out that the rear mech (not the hanger) was bent. Good luck tracking dow the problem.

I had one of them red bikes but I don't any more. Sad face.

Recently spent ages trying to trace a similar problem which turned out to be a broken upper pulley (jockey)
