Having moved to a village just outside Penistone http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=penistone&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=11.123167,30.849609&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Penistone,+Sheffield,+Barnsley,+United+Kingdom&ll=53.508264,-1.6325&spn=0.087388,0.241013&t=h&z=12 only a few months ago, I've been enjoying my rides along the TPT and local bridleways which are less than 1/2mile from my house.

My son (5yr old) has just taken delivery of a Ridgeback mx20, he also enjoys cycling along the TPT however I'm wanting for us to be able to join up with a local cycling club to explore the area in a little more detail and for both of us to meet more people who also enjoy a light hearted ride on a weekend.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Many Thanks
Matthew

    Try http://www.britishcycling.org.uk/clubfinder for Go-Ride Clubs

Click on Region and Club boxes, then select Yorkshire for region and Go-Ride for club.

The map will show 3 clubs in the general Sheffield district with a child-friendly set-up

Also learn more about Go-Ride on http://www.britishcycling.org.uk/go-ride.

That way, you'll know what you might be letting yourself in for. Our 7th and 8th parents have just started their BC coaching awards and others have done the bikeability and Sky-Ride marshall qualifications.

You may have started on an entirely new path/role in life

Fortunately, you have pretty much missed the cyclo-cross season but there's always next year

And I won't even mention the British Schools Cycling Association championships calendar in pretty much every discipline except BMX :D

And, of course, I have inveigled other unsuspecting parents into running events, marshalling, lap counting .... heh heh heh!

HI Matt. Did you find a group?

We're in Silkstone not far away. I've started cycling to get fitter and the wife and kids join in. I'd be keen to join a group. Let me know if you found one please?
  • Mick,

I didn't find anything within the area. To be fair I was only looking for something that we could cycle along to and then head out, I wasn't looking to get in a car and drive somewhere togo out.

There is so much riding around here I don't like to use the car to get somewhere, I would much rather cycle.

I've found a few Bridleway routes advertised in Penistone Library and I've only done the longer routes (8miles upwards) but they are quite good. If you want some PM me your address and I'll get them and drop them off for you, From memory they all start/finish around the showground in Penistone.

  • Hi,

I live just up the road to the south of Huddersfield (which from Millhouse Green is much more accessible than Sheffield - I used to live in Sheffield and commute to Crowedge: which is why i moved).

Although you would have to get in a car (well you do live in Millhouse Green!) Holme Valley Wheelers is very accessible for you and run a go Ride. They have a fantastic history of bringing on young riders (Ed Clancy for one). My club is Star Wheelers and they run a successful Go Ride at Newsome School to the South of Huddersfield (again not much further). My son is the youngest there at 4 years (the club also have a mountain bike section).

End of season really and they'll probably be stopping Go Ride soon but worth considering for next year.
