I want to switch to a skatestyle helmet for commuting so it's alot easier to plaster helmet cameras and lights all over it.

But can't make up my mind what to get.
I ordered the Giro in green because it's so obnoxious but it's also VERY heavy and not very well vented so looking for a skater style helmet sub 300grams for a 54-58cm head.

Urge Dirt-o-matic 300grams (really like the look of the Enduro matic and allmountain too)
http://www.urgebike.com/en/vtt/dirtomatic

Bell Meteor II Time Trial 320grams
http://www.bellsports.com/cycling/helmets/pavement/meteor-ii-eu

Giro Surface in awesome green! 440grams
http://www.giro.com/us_en/surface.html

Suggestions? Anything even better I haven't thought of?

All three look horrible in different ways. They best thing I can say about those helmets is that when you are wearing them, you can't see how horrible they look. That is just inflicted on everyone who sees you.

I'd just get a 'normal' helmet if I were you.

The Urge and the Giro look like cricket helmets, and the Bell looks like a TT helmet - massively pointless/inappropriate for commuting.

If your head is small enough then get this if you want that kind of helmet - http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=10687

  • I think you'd look great in any one of those helmets, but think you should go for the Bell.

Secretly I think you will look like a proper nob-end, but it will give me such a laugh if ever I see you cycling along with one of those things on your head
  • The Urge is a sprayed/branded version of a Tesco bargain kids' lid.
How do I know? I have one.

  • What on earth do you want any of them for commuting in? You'll cook your head and end up with a neck like a bodybuilder.

You can easily put lights and cameras onto a proper cycling helmet, if anything the vents make it easier.

+1 - the vents give you lots of access points for looping round connections etc.

And you're head will absolutely boil in a piss pot helmet.

And the time trial helmet is for time trialling - they're actually pretty crap at being crash helmets, with pointy bits that snag and hurt your neck in a fall...

  • Try one of these - they have decent vents and don't boil you braiin, their not particularly heavy - I use one for my commute

You'll look like a billiard ball!!!!

Perhaps this image of poor helmet choice will aid you in your quest.....

  • To be fair I do think that you'll look like a complete tool in any one of those, however beauty is in the eye of the beholder so go the whole hog and get the Bell TT helmet! Or alternatively any one of the list below;

    American Football Helmet
    Full Face Motorcycle Helmet
    Cricket Batting Helmet
    Top Gun Style Pilots Helmet
KKK Style White Hanky on your Head Look (Before anyone whinges, this does not mean I agree with or condone their beliefs/actions!)
    A Graduate's Mortar Board Hat

I do believe that most if not all of the options above will offer you the same levels of protection and ridicule as any of your given options.

Thanks everyone for the good input so far!

Well I found the Urge helmet for 19.99 @ BikeTart so placed an order.
And leaning towards getting the Bell Meteor because everyone seems to think it's the coolest, but does anyone have experience commuting with one of these? Wondering if it will interfere with my backpack...

I don't get all the comments about cookin my noggin - Although I am American I somehow agreed to live in London for a few years. Trust me it's friggin cold here. In fact I expect it to be about 0 degrees by October 1st and dark and miserable.

I just ordered a magicshine MJ 818 - imagine that strapped to the back tip of the Bell helmet oozing uber awesomeness!!!

the urge looks like it belongs on a jockey.
the second quite clearly says on it what you will look like.
the giro looks like it would be better off on a US marine.

or go straight to secret option number 4:

  • Received the urge today in the post - seems lighter than the Giro and not as garish.
might be the contender especailly for a 20 spot
