Out of one hole, and into another . . .

Hey all. So, I finally got the piece of broken hanger removed from my SRAM X7 derailleur (hooray). I attached the derailleur to the new hanger (which was on the frame already as I replaced that part a while back) and when I routed the chain on etc, the tension pulley is swinging a LOT. There's no tension in the chain now. So, I tried to remove the derailleur but the allen key hole has rounded off, rendering it impossible to remove the derailleur now.
I think, with the loose tension pulley, that the derailleur might be broken?

Is the 'B' adjustment screw butted up against the derailleur hanger? If not that would explain the lack of tension.0

I adjusted the screw in question, but it made little difference. Hopefully the attached images will clear things up ^-^
This pic. shows the long part of the derailleur, which is swinging.
This pic. shows how the chain is resting.

It looks like the Rear Derailleur Torsion Spring inside the cage assembly has broken or come loose. See item 5 on page 23 of attachment:

As its available as a spare part in its own right you should be able to dismantle.0 -
I've seen the X7 priced under £40 on CRC. If I was to buy one, which would be the correct option? Long short or medium cage?"If you're sleeping', you're not gonna play anything" - John Petrucci, 2004.

Derailleur cage length explained on sheldon brown: http://sheldonbrown.com/derailleur.html
For the X7, the tooth difference is 37 for medium cage, and 45 for long. See page 40: http://www.sram.com/sites/default/files ... -rev-a.pdf0 -

Getting it back out, if the allen hole in the mech is stripped, is a job for a big easy-out, or grinding a slot onto the end of the bolt and using a screwdriver, or possibly mashing in a slightly larger torq bit but you'll want to be careful with that as it could make things worse.
Does sound like the mech is probably foobarred though.Uncompromising extremist0 -
