Advice needed on upgrading my ride

Hello all,
I currently own a Saracen Trace 1 hardtail.
After a very long absence from the MTB scene (see my other thread in the begineers section) I have re-caught the bug!
Long story short, my bike needs a little work (as do I!) I found whilst doing the Ruthin round of the MTB marathon, that I just couldn't find a gear that suited my pace when climbing, and that the fork just couldn't take the abuse being thrown at it
My current set up is Shimano Alivio Shifters, chainset, and both Mechs, these are 8spd, and i'm wondering if a 9spd setup would help with cleaner shifts and making it easier to get the right cadence?
As for the Fork, its an SR Suntour XCR with LO.
My budget is slim so can't consider a new bike, and to be honest the frame is very light and fits perfect so don't want to change, just improve.
Any help appreciated 8)

Best thing to do, if the drivetrain is not worn, is to invest in new cables and keep the drivetrain.
What is your budget for the fork?0 -
Hi, could probably stretch to £200 for a fork....
The group isn't worn yet but the chain looked a little rusty, and before garaging it for a year the speedo reckoned I traveled 550miles on the current chain/gear set up...should I consider a new chain?Boardman Comp 2011 Hardtail0 -
A new chain will extend the life, so migth as well!
£200 is a healthy budget, and one fork comes to mind - the Recon RL:

 That's a nice fork!!
Would you say that is the single best/noticable upgrade I can make to my bike?
Because I was thinking of getting some Shimano MT16 wheels too...Boardman Comp 2011 Hardtail0 -
Yes, the fork will make the biggest difference, followed by a good service of the bike, and new tyres.
The wheels are more of a sidestep than a upgrade.0 -
What do you mean by sidestep?
I should elaberate, I planned on possibly running 2 sets of wheels, the original wheels with semi-slicks (Michelin XC Hard terrains), and the MT15's with my Kenda Nevagal DTC Tomacs fitted.
Possibly running a bigger Rotor (180mm) up front as well, mainly because on the really steep parts of ruthin my brakes were propper cooking!
I'm very interested in the Fork but will take a couple of months to save up, so hope its still around that price by then? If not, what are other good options for say £100-150?
Thanks for your time.Boardman Comp 2011 Hardtail0
