Bought for £30 and original brooks saddle sold for £25, complete bike only cost about £60 to put together.

That was my first ever brand new bike when I was about 11 or 12. It looked identical, 10 speed with chromed steel everything (chainset, stem, wheelrims) - high tensile steel frame and not an ounce of alloy on the whole thing. Weighed a ton. I loved it to death. It eventually got nicked after about 5 years.0

That image is from one of those 70s catalogues where families would buy all manner of things on the 'never never' - which is exactly how my parents bought my TDF, bless 'em. Hmm £2.56 x 38 weeks - I'm not sure if my dad's Morris Marina cost that much!
Ah, Weinmann centre pull brakes...... smashing. They looked the business compared with the side pulls on my mates 5 speed bikes. Not the best stoppers though.0 -

Now then, a fabulously smooth and powerfully sprung action. Lovely. Except that the calipers themselves are made of cheese - probably Edam. Can be an interesting experience on a 20% descent...........Faster than a tent.......0 -
first commute today, and love it already
brakes were a little squirty but adjusted now and will be a bit braver on way home.

That Quill Stem looks an awful long way out of the frame...I want to die quietly in my sleep, like my grandfather...
