Hi all,
I've got a '98 Marin Bolinas Ridge with an old pair of Rock Shox forks on the front but the whole lot is getting quite tired. It needs a new dérailleur, chain, bottom bracket, pedals and tyres. I ride it regularly, mostly on the road and easy paths, but I like riding hard, doing wheelies and being able to crash up kerbs without denting the rim so a road bike won't do me.
I've been looking at new mountain bikes in the £300 to £500 range but have been left feeling disappointed that 13 years have passed and modern bikes are still as heavy as my Marin. It seems some parts have got lighter but they have added on heavier new parts such as disc brakes.
Now my problem is that I know I certainly don't need disc brakes - I've had V-brakes for 13 years and they stop me as quick as I want (and no my rims aren't worn through either). So I don't wont disc brakes. Trouble is only bottom spec bikes are sold with V-brakes these days.
Does anyone know of a decent mountain bike for sale new with good chainset, forks, fame etc and V-brakes as standard?
Cheers,

Very few bikes come with V brakes as standard nowadays. One other reason bikes are not any lighter is that the parts are much stiffer and stronger - new safety regs are in play. Infact off the top of my head I can't think of any decent bike for this price with V brakes.
This is the best I can find:

But rather poor fork, and for £150 more are disc brake equipped bikes that are lighter and floor it in performance and spec terms.0 -
Why not just rebuild your bike?
A nice set of forks for the front, some decent wheels and gruppo and you're laughing!0 -

I think thats where I'm heading but I need to be sure that I wont end up spending more on a few new bits for my bike than the cost of a overall better bike. Forks seem to be very expensive on their own and I'll need to change almost everything on my bike to get it back into good running order. Off the top of my head I'll need, bottom bracket, chain, sprockets, wheels, brakes, cables, forks and all cables!0 -
If you shop around you may pick up a bargain...if you can get away with an 18" frame then this is worth a look..

At the end of the day light weight means big bucks....another option could be a hybrid, OK you may have to knock the wheelies on the head but may be worth a shout ?0 -

I'm not giving up wheelies! That Kona looks amazing value I must admit. Very tempting!0
