So . . .

on the project bike . . .

I'm fitting a new Bottom Bracket . . .

it's Shimano. I have the Shimano BB tool thingy . .

here's the thing . . . When I try to get a wheel skewer through to clamp it tight to the fitting - it doesn't go through - I thought that's what the hole through the BB was for?

Refuses point blank to go through the hole in the BB

What am I doing wrong>?

Why are you putting a skewer through your bottom bracket?

I mean, it's your bike, and you're both presumably grown-up and consenting, but why?
    Each to their own, though.
Sometimes parts break. Sometimes you crash. Sometimes it’s your fault.

I found rubber mallet worked to get the chainring and crank on. Though it was external BB that screwed on for me.

That trick - using a skewer to hold the tool in place - only really works on the cassette. A square taper BB doesn't have a hole all the way through, just one at each end. Not sure about Octalink/ISIS and external BBs are different again. If you're careful you won't need it.

Have you tried using a crank bolt instead?

All the cool kids have quick-release cranks these days.

    He's building a fixie unicycle.

    All unicycles are fixies.
Imagine trying to freewheel down a hill on a unicycle.

Not true. You can get unicycles with a freewheel. Usually has a brake fitted as well and you cannot ride backwards.

Pfft. I'm not impressed at any unicycles that have less than 10 speed.......
