Ouch..... Expensive ?!?!

I was out with a mate on Wednesday evening and we had a 'coming together'.

Basically, we were attacking a short (200m) 11% hill, I was behind him. He was looking for me, looked ahead again, dodged a pothole, had a wobble, braked and moved to the right. Unfortunately, this was the side I went to avoid him, and his rear mech came into contact with my front wheel.

Obviously form the pics, you can see that the spoke needs replacing, but the carbon is torn a little bit, probably 4-5mm (I've not measured it). It'll have to go back to Trek UK for a rebuild, but, in your valued opinions, it this a scrapped wheel ? Interestingly, we had about 3miles to the end of the ride, and the wheel is still perfectly true !!!!

The wheel is a Bontrager Aeolus 5.0ACC, and I believe that the carbon is just a fairing and not structural. Can anyone add to this ?

Cheers.......... I'd rather not spend £400 on a new one !

    Darren is a top bloke and did a first class job on my frame. That said, he's not wonderful with email so I'd give him a ring first if I were you.

    The carbon is a fairing, not structural. The spoke just passes through and the nipple is in the aluminium rim not the carbon so the carbon is not under tension. A Shimano WH-7850 C50 for example has the nipples on the fairing which makes truing easier but loads the fairing too.

    Get a new spoke and fit it yourself.

    Thanks for the recommendations for Darren at http://www.carboncyclerepairs.co.uk/index.html I've just had a very interesting conversation with him and he reckons he can repair the carbon damage easily. His mate is also a Trek dealer, so once the carbon is repaired, he will get him to replace the spoke and true & retension the wheel.

    Result !!!!!

    It's a SRAM rear mech, it's bl**dy bombproof, just a scuff on the paint !!

    Darren at Carbon Bike Solutions has done a fantastic job, you can barely see the repair.

    HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !!!!
