It ticks all the boxes but I do have one question

IT will be used for winter, canal commuting,

As it has disk brakes , if the going gets rough , can I swap the wheels for 26" ones ( SS) with disk's ???

  • Yes, but you'll be nearer the floor. Also, why would you? You could get some 29-er wheels built up that would be just as strong (not that CX wheels should be weak).

TBH I've just always assume 26 = STRONGER than 700c

Like for like yes, but 700c/29er wheels should be fine.

Std 700c wheels are plenty strong enough for off-road riding. I ride my 32 spoke 700c light touring bike over tracks and trails, inc the South Downs Way.

26" will put you lower, esp your bottom bracket, so your pedals will catch on rocks.

There is a customisation option on the Pompetamine Versa for 36 spoke wheels so you could get these instead of 32 spokes if you want the wheels to be more robust.

The customisation options on the On-One website seem to change frequently (probably depending what they have in stock) so there may not always be this option.

Won't 26in wheels with fat tyres be *roughly* the same size as 700c with skinnier slicks?

The tyres on my MTB are frickin huuuuggee!
