Is this bike suitable for Downhill? Planning to ride the Fort William tracks

If not, could you guys give any suggestions? Thanks in advance

should be good for one run...maybe.
Don't get it, you would be better off getting a good secondhand bike for that money.

main problems with the bike are
    Cable discs... won't stop you
Acera gears will break quite quickly
rst forks will develop play then feel terrible
Not sure how well the rear sus will work at all
Just a very quick ebay search has shown you can get something ok for £500
    Example

Well dont get that one then! Not all norcos are the same size! The ones linked to above both look good for the money.

The first is a 17inch frame and the second is a medium so both should be either the right size or a little too small for you, however the only real way to make sure it is right for you is to arrange with the seller to go and sit on it/ have a little test ride.

That Norco six is definitely not a DH machine either. It has a very steep head angle, which can cause problems on a big DH run.

It'll be better than a £500 full suss diamondback though

Hi Josh, Are you buying a bike to just to use during a trip to Fort Bill.

If so you might be better off hiring a real DH bike locally, it'll be able to handle the course better and you'll have more fun than trying to get an unsuitable bike down.

Speak to somebody like Nevis cycles. http://www.neviscycles.com/

Yup, the old hire bikes from Offbeat were terrible but Alpine have taken over and have a load of Treks (sessions?) and Saracen Mysts. Not cheap mind but they seemed well kept.

Fort william's not the hardest track but it does beat s**t out of you and your bike. From a technical point of view you could ride it slowly on just about anything, but if you want to do it with any pace you need something pretty decent. Not neccesarily a DH bike but a capable trail bike.

The red you could do on anything, with the right approach and a bit of skill. I really want to take my rigid down it some time. But again for pace you need something good.

And also, not to be a dick, but I've a feeling that if you're asking this question, you probably aren't going to get on too well up aonach mor.

  • If you have to ask... the answer is probably either...

    1) no
    2) not very well.

From the title of this thread I was hoping it was going to be a DH version of the popular Will It Blend meme.

I was thinking that exact same thing - especially since I've got a new video-related toy arriving today, hopefully.
However, it leaves me with no money left to buy the sacrificial BSOs :(
