Fibula head pain - any ideas what it is?

Hi all,

I've picked up an injury that is driving me mad. I'm sure you all know how frustrating it is to just want to get on the bike, but can't because of a niggling injury...

After an hour or so of steady road riding I get a pain come on around the head of my right fibula, right where the tendon (biceps femoris?) joins it. It then comes and goes, but can sometimes be quite painful. The actual head of the fibula and tendon can be tender, too. I've been getting it for a couple of months and have treated it with rest, ice, anti-inflammatories, and even had physio work on it with some acupuncture. It's getting no better - help!

My bike setup is good and I've been riding for 7-8 years. Last year was fabulous and my fitness was the best it's ever been, but this year I've been doing a bit less AND got this injury. I stretch regularly etc.

Does anyone have any experience of this?

Cheers.

Dislocation???? surely he wouldn't be able to walk?

I would see a specialist sports injury geezer. Could be any manner of things- tendonitis, torn muscle etc.

I had a partial dislocation several years ago - I could walk fine, but it gave me a lot of pain when I cycled...

could be a tight muscle pulling on the tendon anchor, I would thoroughly recommend go see a sports physiotherapist for some deep massage to release those muscles. I guarantee that you have no idea how truly tight your muscles are until you have had a £30 pain session. Trust me, it will work...
