Are you all sitting comfortably? The story begins with our arrival at Berwick-on-Tweed on Sunday 5th June. After checking into our digs for the night, which was very well appointed, (details to folllow at end of story), we ventured forth into town. Following food at one of Berwick's hotels, we found 'The Free Trade' PH. Now this can only be described as something out of a 'Wild West' movie, complete with swing doors into the bar. All that was missing was the sound of spurs, made up for by the click of cycling shoes. If you ever go to Berwick, this place is a must! I shall not say much more about 'Free Trade' or it will spoil it for you.
First day on the road (Mon 6th June), The Grand Departure took place at 9am with the obligatory photoshoot under the Sustrans route signpost saying 'Derby 355 miles' - a mere snip for the Derbyshire gang of 5! The route out of Berwick is on quiet roads, with a roll into Scotland for a few miles. more tomorrow.
