Sheffrec CC 4th Cat Only Evening Road Race

Entries close for our first evening road race next week. Entries are low at the moment but I wanted to give 4th category riders a chance of racing without getting hammered by 3rd cat riders. The race is held on the Barlow Triangle Circuit which is near to Baslow / Chatsworth close to the Sheffield / Derbyshire border.

Anyone wanting to enter, please post below or let me know.

Details of the race are here:

Thanks,

Marc.

Can you guarantee that all the riders are safe?

i'd give it a go if it was a week or two earlier asi'm working in donny for the next two weeks. a rush hour drive from hull is too much though.

i did their spring road race the other week and it was really well organised with marshalling from the national escort group.

The circuit is triangular, with 1 tight turn. The roads are quiet with no climbs as such. There is a bit of a drag which over 17 or so laps wears you down a bit. I ran 2 races on the same circuit last year and they were won by breakaway riders. Maybe different depending on what the riders want to race.

Can you ever guarantee that riders are safe? We are not talking about 120 riders racing on a tight city centre crit circuit. We had one crash on the circuit last year and this was in a 2/3/4 race. Given peoples general opinion of 4th cats, I've made a bold move and put faith in local riders and hopefully giving less experienced racers the chance to race and a chance of scoring some points.

My comment was tongue in cheek bearing in mind the current topics in this section!

If you ran this later in the year I'd give it a go. As it is all my training has been targetted towards TTs. I suspect jumping out of 51 corners would be a real shock to my system!

  • Sheffrec CC 4th Cat Evening RR - RESULTS & RACE REPORT

48 forth category riders departed the Fox & Goose Public House to tackle 17 laps of the Barlow Triangle Circuit. The conditions were dull but changeable but the threatening rain never made an appearance. The first few laps we ridden at a fast pace with several riders dropped on the opening laps.

Lap 6 brought the prime lap and this was taken by Mark Filder riding for the promoting club, Sheffrec CC. This stirred the bunch once more and again dropped a couple more riders. A few attacks came and went but the active riders on the front of the peloton chased most gaps down as fast as they came.

Over the closing stages the field lapped a group of 8 riders giving them a clear run at the line. In the sprint, it was once again to be the night for Mark Fidler of Sheffrec CC who would hold off the fighting bunch to claim victory by half a wheel from Tom Sutton of Sheffield Phoenix. Fellow Sheffrec CC junior, Will Glover just edged out Andrew Robinson, Dinnington RC to complete the final podium position. Following Robinson in 5th was Rutland Velo rider, Rowland Clark from Leigh Holmes, GB Fire Service, 6th. Local rider, Alan Dawson, Sheffield 220 City Road RT came 7th with James Headley Smith, Sleaford Wheelers, Nick Downham, Sheffrec CC and Edward Farnell, Manchester Wheelers rounding off the top 10.

The Ladies winner was Frances White riding for the University of Manchester with Phoebe Sneddon, Inverse RT / Cycleclaim.co.uk placing second after soldiering on to finish in her first ever road race. Phoebe was given the nights combativity award for her efforts.

Well done to all the riders who supported the event. The Chief Commissaire, Julie Rodman praised the riders on their level of safe riding and also the marshals for keeping the roads safe for the duration of the event. Event organiser, Marc Etches of Sheffrec CC would like to pass their thanks to Craig Lynch and his team at the Fox & Goose Public House, Wigley for providing us with a first class venue to base our event at.

The next race at the Barlow Triangle is a 3/4 Category race, organised by Peak Road Club on the 28th June. Sheffrec’s next evening road race will be an E123 race which should provide a great spectacle for spectators as one of the only evening Elite races in the area.
  • Sounds like a good event

Out of interest how do you keep the riders safe from traffic?
Do the police let you close the roads or do you rely on motorists goodwill when asked to divert by a marshall?

    Cheers

We simply have to rely on the co-operation from other road users. The marshals can only advise the motorists that the riders are coming. We have no power to make them stop and legally they dont have to stop.
