there i was riding my own business on Saturday when the next minute my gears were spinning like the cassette was worn, i had just ridden past a load of scallywags aswell so i didn't want to stop

anyways looked down at my cassette an see this

i know Japanese knot weed is bad but i didn't think it would attack you as your riding along

    i think... if it is jap knot weed you need to tell local council where it was.

    its a right bugger to get rid of and all sitings need reported

    there is shed loads of it growing on my route in, its like giant bamboo, up to about 7ft in places (i will try an get a pic tonight)

    i cant understand how it got into my cassette though, must have made a bid for freedom

    i will look on the council website to report it

    if its all 7 ft high, the place will have to be nuked! :shock:

    depends on how close that is to civilisation, but i can imagine the council not doing anything if there is no immediate threat...you might want to try the environment agency as well though...

    JKW is serious stuff and should be reported to the local council whenever seen, it's very forceful stuff and can destroy building foundations once it gets hold... Councils are supposed to destroy as soon as they know it's there

    Japanese knotweed is ridiculous. I remember reading up on how to dispose of it back when I worked in property insurance.

    The process is something insane like:

    Cut it all down and burn it
    Bury the burned remains at least three metres deep or dump into the sea.
    Treat the site with a particularly vicious and non-selective weedkiller and cover it in a two metre deep layer of gravel and soil.
    Treat the regrowth with another horrible weedkiller (one of the two is agent white, as used during the Vietnam war, but I can't remember if it's the first one or the second) and keep doing so for a period of months.
    Site is considered safe for construction when there has been no evidence of regrowth for a year.

    The stuff will literally grow straight through concrete foundations.
