hey im 15 years old and have done two of the wiggle super series mtb events. soon im gonna be getting my children's bond account which will have just over 200 quid in it (not including my exam result money), i was wondering what the general opion is about what stuff i should get seeing as im almost certainly going to enter more races, my current bike is a Raleigh at10 v-spec. my first upgrade is gonna be forks (rock shox dart 2), then discs(mechanics in front fluids in the rear) and then finnaly a new set of shimano wheels.
please post responses on whether im making the right choice on the new gear and/or other equipment needed for my type of riding.
thanks, Tom

What size frame do you have? Because at 15 you could well have a few inches in hight to grow. So it may be wiser to bank the money, then save like mad for a year. Then beg a little more cash off the bank of mum and dad, and buy a completely new bike.
In the mean time you have a year to drool over what you could have.
Sorry if its not what you want to hear.0 -
Yes, that is good advice.
If you do upgrade though I think you are doing it wrong. Dart 2s, and that combo of brakes is not the best choices.0 -
The money would be better spent on saving for a whole new bike tbh0

Do this, if you get to around 300-400 you can get a cracking second hand Giant XTC or similar. And now you know, and knowing is half the battle

well that bike (20 inch im 5ft,10) ive got was new in march for my birthday, but i guess i get a new bike every year (if not every couple of years) under the £200 mark, so im gonna stick at least until ive left secondary school which buy then i should have a simple job so then i could really splash out on a new trail bike or something thats light, fast and can take the hits.
or on the other hand i could stick with the bike ive got and completely kit it out(which has all of the above and is a hardtail).T.Bolton0 -
Wait, it may feel hard now, but it'll be worth it. Alternatively if you do upgrade all the bits on your Raleigh, you can upgrade the frame at some point, but it will cost more in the long run, which is probably not a great idea.
I'm 15 too btw, only reason I have all the bikes I have is very careful saving, scouring of eBay for 2nd hand stuff, and quite a lot of luck, mainly getting £600 from an insurance claim after I got hit by a car (Don't try it)

I was on my roadie, but I fixed it up for £50 8) Took about 2 months to get the cash, but I had a very solid case, and the woman's insurance company seemed to take my side, which was nice.
I used the rest to get my Enduro, I've now spent over £1000 on it now but apart from the brakes it's exactly how I want it. If you can find one in good nick then I definitely recommend it, mines around 13kg and absolutely bombproof. And now you know, and knowing is half the battle

Canyons are lookng tempting but I'm sure by the time I've saved up enough the price will have risen by about £500 because they're now popular over here. The insurance company is also being really good with me, maybe because she was clearly at fault, I had a witness and also a solicitor to sort it all. For the record, I also don't recommend getting hit by a car, I've done more fun things in my life. I'm in teh final stages of getting the money. I would just save it all but the bike needs a whole new drivetrain and I need general kit like shoes, full face, normal lid, clothes and a better sized hydration pack.0

These are a bargain, I got one a while ago, it's got enough space for a waterproof, pump, shock pump, tubes, tools, gloves, and food, and also has a mesh to strap your lid too.
I doubt the price of Canyon's will go up much, as their business model is high volume sales with a low(ish) profit on each sale. Maybe £100-£200 by 2012/2013, but I'd be very surprised if they went much higher. And now you know, and knowing is half the battle

I'd be looking at something bigger than that. An Evoc CC 16l is at the top of the list.0

looking on eBay now, and also went up halfords earlier to look at there second hand bikes, they've got 8, 3 apolos, one carrera(it was black and green and the only problems with it was the seat rail was snapped and one of the spokes on the front was missing)that was only 150 and my favorite was the vodo it had a black frame and there was only one problem with it, the granny wheel was missing. im also watching a couple of bikes on eBay and other cycle shops with decent bikes at lower retail prices.T.Bolton0 -
Avoid the Apollos, they are rubbish. Carrera and Voodoo are ok though.I don't do smileys.
