Just been at work flicking through The Independant on Saturday's supplement that had a list of the best 50 bikes.

Coming in at 47 is the Genisis Core 10 and I quote.....

"Genisis's Core range of Hardballs (Bikes with only front suspension) are great for beginner and intermediate mountain bikers"

Is that a specific term for Genisis bikes like Gary Fisher has G2 ?

Ragley refer to them selves as the 'Home of the original Hardball Hardtail'.

I have no idea what that actually means

It came from the same thing. Hardtail was autocorrected to hardball, head of Ragley liked it and decided to use it as marketing.
